Regardless of where you are going the dress on cruises is casual,,i.e. shorts, slacks, "T" shirts, sandals, sneakers, during the day and "Sports Casual" (i.e., what you would expect to see worn in a business office) after 6:00 PM. If you are going to the Caribbean you can wear your swim wear at/in the pool area, but a wrap while headed there. The sports casual dress is required in public areas like the dining rooms, casino, show rooms, disco, bars. You don't have to dress up for dinner unless you want to; sports casual is fine.
Most 7-day cruises have two formal nights when you can wear your best stuff and get pictures taken, and maybe meet the ship’s Captain.
The formal nights are REQUESTED not required attire. But most people do dress up in a tux for men and a long dress (any color) for women. Some men just wear a suit and tie and some women wear a nice dress but not a gown. You will not be denied access to the dining room or anything else if you choose not to dress up. (we usually take off the formal stuff after dinner and pictures anyway).
If you are going to Alaska, or the Baltic, take warm clothes (jacket and hat/gloves) because it will be cold near the glaciers and also very cool on deck at night while you are at sea.

Unfourtanetely you didn't tell me the Cruise Line, but thats all right.
If you are going on something like Carnival, Princess, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian.
Pack One set of nice clothing for the capatains ball.
For every 2 days on board pack One Bathing Suit
For Everyday onboard, 1-2 pairs of shorts or pants, based on location.
1-2 Shirts.
A few pairs of Socks and Underwear. obviously.
I would take one jacket or poncho, cause ya never know.
i mean Syle is up to you.
If you are doing something more Luxarious. Bring a few more suits.
*Just a side note. On some Cruise lines they won't allow you in the Dining room with shorts or flip flops on, so Bring a few pairs of pants and nice shoes and sneakers.
Have Fun, Good Luck, Cruises are the best vacations, it will be great.

I went on a 7 day cruise to Alaska last year and I'm going on one again. This year I am bringing: Khaki and black capris Black Dress Pants 1 or 2 nice, yet casual skirts Nice jeans 1 or 2 cocktail dresses for formal dinners (I wouldn't bring a prom dress) Blouses to layer over tank tops TShirts A heavy sweater or light jacket to wear on the deck at night Tennis shoes, sandals, heels, swimsuits and gym pants if you do any physical activites on board.

If the cruise is to a warm place, wear summer clothes, comfortable, sunglasses, hats, etc. If the cruise is to a cooler area (Alaska), take along one heavy coat, gloves, hat, etc. Otherwise you can wear just about anything you want. Be sure to take something formal and dressy for the Captain's Ball/Dinner. And maybe a couple of formal outfits in case you want to go to an onshore opera, ballet, etc. Bon Voyage!

Dont, forget to take a pair of swim wear!!!
the other thing is, onany cruise there are banquets and dance parties...so do include a nice pair of dancing shoes and good party wear.
A lot of casuals would be good for you when u are on your own on the deck...like shorts, t shirts, etc...
hope this answers your query!!!

Warm weather cruise:
- For women, sandals/espadrilles/non-slip shoes. No high heels on deck, except for dinner, where you can wear heels with a dress (formal, décolleté).
- For men, sandals/suede shoes together with casual wear such as corduroy trousers, short sleeved shirts and tweed jackets. Formal wear and clean shoes (shined) during dinner.
- bathing suits and bathrobes (don't forget your sunblock lotion and sunglasses)
- linen hats/scarves to shield you from the sun rays/wind.
- shorts, trousers, tops
Cold weather cruise, add: socks, sweaters, coats
