wordpad is not working and I have lots of text stuff, what do you think I should download instead?

What do you want to do with it. Do you want it to be free? Try Open Office it is like a free Word.

If you want a little bit more than just Word Pad or Note Pad, why not give Open Office a try? It is free and will do just about everything that MS Office does.

Yes def. Open Office. It is free, stable, almost like Win Word and can save as a MS word document if you ever need to take your files to school/work

Personally I like to use Vim but that's more for programming than basic text file viewing/editing.

Use notepad ++ it is free and better than notepad. Wordpad sucks it is very buggy.

Try textpad. It highlights different formatting and can even help with formatting websites, programming, and lots other stuff.

try to download the free trial of microsoft office 2007.

you also have notepad, dont you? you can use it instead of word only if your document would contain pure text
