If you want a little bit more than just Word Pad or Note Pad, why not give Open Office a try? It is free and will do just about everything that MS Office does.

Yes def. Open Office. It is free, stable, almost like Win Word and can save as a MS word document if you ever need to take your files to school/work

Use notepad ++ it is free and better than notepad. Wordpad sucks it is very buggy.

Try textpad. It highlights different formatting and can even help with formatting websites, programming, and lots other stuff.
