I'm going to wait until the bugs are out of VISTA before I try it.

Best way is to back things up. Put your important files on a CD, or transfer them to another computer using a network. next time, make sure you partition your hard drive, so that it is basically 2 drives in one.

Here;s also an idea...buy another Harddrive. Place it into your computer before the vista installation. Put all of your files on there, then install vista on the original drive.

Buy an external hard drive or flashdrive. Copy all files you want to the storage device - surely you would want backups anyway.

I don't know Vista - don't intend to buy yet, but, if it uses My Documents (as WinXP does), and all your files are in My Documents, try renaming My Documents. Then, when you install Vista, it will not overwrite your files. After you have successfully installed, simply cut/paste the files appropriately.

This would be in addition to the external backups.

It's the price you pay, Vista doesn't actually delete files so much as re-arrange them. However it will take out some of your drivers and you'll need to download Vista ones.

you can't truely upgrade with Vista. It's a completely standalone install.

Good news: When you install it, it backs up all your program files, etc. into a folder on the C drive called "windows old" or "windows.old". Just make sure you can re-install them.
