Sleep problems can often be linked with depression. Especially fitful sleep. If there are similarly depressive symptoms (feeling nothing or just negative about things, lack of energy or motivation and the like) you should probably get checked out by a mental health professional. Depression is extremely common and can be very dangerous much of the time if it's not treated. Thankfully, it's very easy to treat. However, if you lack some of the other symptoms/criteria for depression, it may just be a sleep disorder or some other thing affecting your rest cycle. For depression, try the interactive depression checklist at www.beyondblue.org.au

Sounds like a sleep disorder more than anything. People with bipolar II disorder have hypomanic (not full-blown manic) episodes, and may not sleep much in that period of time.

It could be Circadian Rhythm Sleep DIsorder, where somebody doesn't have a regular sleep schedule. Some people do this temporarily, during jet lag, etc.

None of us are psychiatrists, but I would look into dysthymia, along with major depression and seasonal affective disorder.
