I live in the state of Florida. If a student or professor had had a concealed firearm, they could have eliminated the threat and prevented more loss of life.

No, do not carry a concealed weapon. At most you will probably get arrested for carrying it, they would make a big show of it because they would think you wanted to kill a bunch of people. The odds are that you will never be in a situation like this tragic one. Make it a practice to know where you are at all times and the safest way out. Take a self defense course. Learn how to dodge and weave while moving around and how to fight back if cornered. If five people would have attacked this guy at the same time he would have been overcome and a slaughter would have been avoided. Sadly maybe we need to teach the lesson of the airplane over Pennsylvania - go down fighting.

No its not worth it. Like most of the posters said, you will have a better chance of getting caught with it than being in a situation such as the VT shootings where you think you would be able to use it. But what happens when you are in a situation where the gunman takes hostiges? Then your gun that you felt all mighty powerful for having on you is now in the gunman's hands. I would assume that you would have a full clip in it and so you have just given the gunman more ammunition to kill more. Think about how you would feel if the guy across the room or next to you was shot and killed with your gun.

The police are equipped with guns because they have been trained in all kinds of situations where their gun might be stolen right off their hip. Yes there are occassions when their gun is taken from them but they are few and far between. Let the police do the job that they were trained for instead of you breaking the law and possibly putting yourself or someone else in more danger.

That's a tough question, but I think the American people are beginning to realize that carrying a concealed weapon may be the only means of protecting their families and loved ones against the likes of Columbine and Virginia Tech crazed gunmen .

I was thinking Florida was a state where you could get a license to carry a concealed firearm.

That is not necessarily true. Simply having a gun on your person does not mean you are able to use it effectively to protect yourself.

I don't believe the answer to this tragedy will be found in increasing handgun ownership. But making ownership illegal won't work either. This young man was determined to kill as many people as he could. If he had been prevented from purchasing the handguns, I believe he would have sought another method, perhaps a homemade bomb.

Right now, the focus should NOT be on gun bans or other legislative acts. The focus must be on the families impacted by this horrific act. Let's not allow this event to be demeaned by turning it into a political platform.

Florida law prohibits concealed carry at "any school, college, or professional athletic event not related to firearms;"

It's your responsibility to protect your own life, although the law prohibits it. It's a tough question.

When my kids are old enough to go to college, they won't be going anywhere in Florida, sorry :(

You carrying a firearm does not make you much safer simply because the chances of you having to use it are slim to none. People are acting like this happens every day.

Chances are you'll be the next person on the news because they busted you with the weapon.

I agree with you,BUT. DO NOT BREAK LAWS. Find a way...write congress, call the state reps and tell them what you believe, ie. the right to protect yourself. Vote for people who will see things your way. start a group on campus. The "I wish to live" foundation and hold meetings and rallies. video tape the violent responses from other students as proof. BUT DO NOT BREAK LAWS!

when some one is shooting at you who do you call. The Cops. Why. Because they have guns. Seems to me if I got one handy I can cut out the wait, and save on cell minutes.

I do not know how they can outlaw guns on a Campus anyway. You always have the inherent right to self defense. How can a university strip you of that right?

Yes they could have, but then this is one event in decades and the such, what laws we need to change is the issues where a know student with a problem could not be forced to get help.

no, the odds of you being discovered are much greater than that of you getting shot at school. Unless you want to go to prison, I wouldn't advise it.
