There are several ways...

One is the simple braiding method, just shower, towel dry your hair until it's damp and then simply braid your hair. For tighter waves do smaller braids with less hair, for big waves, do them with more hair.

Another way is the rollers.. they're foam , very soft , so it's not uncomfortable to sleep on. Just roll your hair, damp hair works best, and int he morning take them out, seperate your waves with your fingers and spray lightly with hairspray to hold. You can also you the fabric strips they have, or even just roll your hair and then pin with bobby pins.

I personally like dividing my hair into three sections after I had showered and towel dried my hair. I then twist each section into a bun, secure with a hair band and/or some bobby pins, and then sleep on it. In the morning I take them all out, tousel, and go.

With all methods, make sure you use some kind of product to keep friz down and make your hair shiny and smooth.. they have some good curling gel, made to hold the curl or wave. Apply the product before you start any of the above methods.
After you unbraid, unroll, unbun (haha) etc., I liek to finish with a light spray of hairspray.. nothing to strong, just to hold my new waves in place.

Hope I helped : )

The braid idea works great but it meeds to be french braided, otherwise the top of your hair will be waved and the top will be straight. There are also some soft foam rollers that you can roll your hair with and sleep on over night. In the olden days, women used to roll their hair on "rags", pieces of cloth, and then tie the ends together and sleep that way over night. One last piece of advice: don't forget your ends!

Try braiding your hair into one or two big braids after applying some gel and sleep on it, then take it out in the morning.

If you take a shower and let your hair air dry, loosely braid it and leave it in all night.

You could also put your hair in pincurls. Make them big pincurls and to hold them use bobby pins.
