I always remember from junior high and elementary, how they made us go over plans and have fire and tornado drills. They told us everyone should have escape plans in their homes, that the family knows about in case something happens. I was just wondering how many people actually have such a plan?

In my house we have 4 smoke detectors and we do "escape runs" every 2 months. We have a special tape that we film these runs on every time. (Mostly for memories :) but so they can look again if anything is done wrong.)

We have explained numerous things and practice this...

1. Get out the window! Don't look for others! Just get out!
2. Run to the tree at the far end of the front yard and WAIT! If someone is missing DON'T TRY TO GO BACK IN! THEY COULD BE SOMEWHERE ELSE IN THE YARD or at the neighbors house, etc!
3. Scream "fire" as loud as you can!
4. and again WAIT! Don't try to run back into the house no matter what!

On one test, at the last minute, I grabbed one of my 5 kids and had him stay behind then run to the neighbors yard. Within 2 minutes 3 of the others were coming back into the house to find him. We looked back over the tape and explained that this could have cost all of them their lives...and the missing brother WAS safe...

I have a "check batteries" day for the smoke detectors once a month. So I don't forget I time it on the 15th...the same day I change the filter for the furnace.

My family didn't have a plan that we went over together until we had the fire in our apartment building 12-3-05....that was the most horrible day of our lives. Now that we have our own home we have made a plan for fire and tornadoes and we are in the process of gathering all the necessities our family would need in case of an emergency. 2-3 gallons of water per person per day for 3 days, first aid kits, extra blankets, toilet paper, enough non perishable food for 3 days, weather radio, flash lights, batteries, fire extinguisher. I'm just a slightly paranoid person these days.

I have a plan, out the bedroom window that opens fully! My tumble dryer set on fire in the middle of the night and I was lucky that my 5 year old had got up at 1am to go to the loo and smelt it because the smoke detectors did not go off for ages! Lucky not much damage and we were all safe! Plan one!

I have been working with my 5 year old on the escape plans for our home. Now when we have visitors she tells them to the very last detail, where we are to meet, how to call 911, how to put yourself out if you are on fire and all the ways to get out of the house if there is a fire. She is also learning how to use the phone for emergencies.
We started this after our friend's home burnt and thanks to the quick thinking of her 8 year old son, she, her husband and both of thier children got out just in time. He is recieving a special award tomorrow for his actions from the town we all live in.
I believe that it is very important to teach your kids how to react to a fire or any emergency. You never know what might happen and they could one day save lives for knowing what to do and what not to.

Yes we do. I have always heard that it is best to keep the bedroom doors shut, in case a fire breaks out in another part of the house, the fire will not reach the bedrooms as fast as it would if the doors were open. My kids share a room. My oldest is 10 1/2 and he knows that if he ever hears the smoke alarm, he is to get his sister and climb out his window as fast as possible and run to our neighbors house. I also keep the baby monitor on in my bedroom and also a fire extingusher in my room too.

Yes our family has a plain for fires and other incidents, my son is 3 years old and he knows to stay low to the ground, to feel doors for if they are hot, and where are family meeting spot is he also knows to call 911 and our address. I think it is very impotent to have a plain in order to keep your family safe, you never know what will happen, and if you have a plain it may help with the panic and confusion, we have drills about once a month.

Yes, we have a plan. In fact, we leave it up to my 9-year old son to create the plan. He brings the plan to us and we may comment on it and revise some of the things, but overall, it's his plan.

It makes him feel more comfortable in case of an emergency and we're sure that he'll remember it since he was the one that spent so much time and put so much thought into it.

My family does have a plan and it is posted in the living room. However, we don't have the recommended supplies gathered in case of tornado or something.
