It sounds as though whoever is asking this question is using the word, "kepi", incorrectly.

American troops NEVER wore "kepis".

In the War of 1812, and the Creek Indian War, United States troops wore shakos, which are taller than kepis.

During the War Between the States, both Confederate and Union soldiers wore foraging caps, which unlike the kepi, have the crown sloping towards the front.

The kepi is worn by French soldiers.

"Kepi" is the French word for "cap".

The white kepi is worn only by members of the French Foreign Legion.
