Shy to ask her what? if it's normal? It's NOT, unless she's trying to keep the relationship a secret.
Now, as to understanding women, you never will completely.
BUT, you can get the audio version of Men are From Mars and Women are from Venus - the audio version, because the guy that reads it is hilarious! I mean it's a riot!!! But it's also very educational.
The only other pieces of advice I can give you, without charging you at a lecture hall are:
If she acts crazy, stay calm, and look at her like she's unreasonable, and she'll usually calm down.
Smile.
And be confident no matter what.

I am sure that this girl likes your friend! Is the guy she is with popular? usually girls that are in the popular crowed go out with the popular guys or the jocks!! just to keep their status, or because it is expected of them, and then when they get older they realize that popularity isnt that important!! just tell your friend that he should talk to her more and just get know her, maybe even study with her. yes, girls are confusing but you have to remember so are guys to girls!! you will never compleatly understand the opposite sex, but that is what makes it all worth while and GREAT!!!

Dont try to figure us girls out... it wont work. Just take it as a friendly "HI" and leave it like that. She has a boyfriend, if she wanted to date someone else she would break up with the boyfriend.

yeah they are. if your with your best friend say hi too. start saying hi to girls and become friends. i have this one guy friend and we talk on the phone, hang out and do tons of stuff. just try to be there for any girl.
