It comes from a conversation between Nicodemus, the tax collector, and Jesus. Jesus said you have to be born again. Nicodemus asked if he had to crawl back inside his mother's womb. Jesus said, no, be born of water and the spirit.
Born again has come to mean a fundamentalist Christian who "gets saved" and acts holier than thou, slips, and gets saved, repeat, repeat, repeat. They are usually characterized by their habit of judging everyone else.

To be born again mean exactly that. I will try to expalin in a way you can learn from. God is light and created the first man adam in his perfected image. Including his Glory. The light of God was upon original man. Then man sinned. That light became darkness with man and mans spirit died before God. Satan recieved the authority of man and the Glory of original man.
To restore man to God he had to send a sinless person into the earth. That person had to have free will and remain sinnless. God sent Jesus who is the word of God. Jesus can forth from the father to become a man. Jesus is God.
When Jesus died the law that had condemmed man to hell and punishment then became a point of contact for salvation to enter the world for all believers of Christ because Jesus died and that is a voilation of the Law because he had no sin of his own. Death entered the worl thru sin. Thus if a person died with out Sin it means satan voilated the Law. When satan voilated the Law then God had the Legal right to once again remove satans Glory and power.
Jesus was rewarded salvation as his reward he can save all who the father give to him. A born again christian has been saved from a spiritual rebirth into the Kingdom of Christ and our God. The Christian at salvation recieves the spirit of Jesus the Christ, They also recieve the spirit of the Holy Spirit. Two different part of the Father. Yeat both fully God and fully different. So a christian became part of God family and thus they have become gods. Notice the Little G.
If christians every find out they are really gods the world would really be turned up side down. I have done a little expermenting and you would be amazed at what a god can do with a single word.

Bow your hear to Jesus - he is my Lord & prepares the path before me.
Born of the Spirit - as a seal guaranteeing your inheritance, you are given God the Holy Spirit to live inside you to guide, minister, comfort & lead you in all truth.
Being born again means you step into God's courtroom & when you cannot pay the fine & are sentenced to death, up steps Jesus & says I'll pay it & you go free.
But get this, the dude is a King & not only that, he adopts you & now you are joint heirs with no earthly king, but the King of the Universe...dude I'm royalty.
Cool hughhhh....you could be royalty too - its a matter of roots......

A true "born again" Christian is one who has been baptized by water and the Holy Spirit as stated in John 3

One who decides to follow Christ and live a life that is pleasing to God. A person who gives their life to Christ asks him into their heart and therefore God can work on their heart and they change through time.
It also depends on where the person has come from because there are a number of things that they may have to deal with when they become a Christian. Some people require healing others may require deliverance or even both.
It depends on the life they used to live because every person is different and also since we are individuals we may handle things differently as well. God treats us as individuals and deals with us as individuals.

Every spirit-anointed Christian is born again in the Biblical sense.
John 3:3-5 says: "In answer Jesus said to him: “Most truly I say to you, Unless anyone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nic·o·de′mus said to him: “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter into the womb of his mother a second time and be born, can he?” Jesus answered: “Most truly I say to you, Unless anyone is born from water and spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God."
Someone claiming to be a Born-Again Christian is usually referring to a branch of Christianity.

I will tell you:
1. you get your spirit recreated (born-again)
2. you get your soul filled with the Holy Spirit
3. you read your Bible religiously
4. you pray in your prayer closet religiously
5. you go to "church" all the time
6. you learn how to fast
7. you learn how to defeat sin in your life
8. you learn how to overcome satan
9. signs and wonders start following you
10. you do miracles in Jesus Name
11. Jesus calls you Friend
When you ask Jesus to come into your Heart and Save (recreate you, a spirit) HE Does.
Then you are a Child of GOD.
If you continue on with the rest of the Program, you become a "Christian" (Christ-Like) and you will Walk and Talk and Act just like Jesus did when HE walked and talked and acted while Jesus was on the Earth.

That would be someone who has symbolically given up his own life to become Christ-like. It is a turning point in a person's life where he leaves the things of the world behind him so to speak and takes up the mantle of Jesus and tries to be as close to what Jesus was as possible.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
The word "again" (anothen) in Greek means "from above", so born from above.
John 3:4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
We all are born of the flesh and water, the womb. You must be born from above or the Spirit. God's Word is His Spirit. I pray that helps you. Sow to your spirit by studying His Word which is God's Spirit.
