Above rather "interesting" answers. Per testing, forget the K&N unless you want MUCH less engine life due to dirt. You have a HUGE air cleaner. Modifications to exhaust are worthless, unless you have a problem, for economy, but good for performance.
What axle ratio do you have? My 85 has the 3.07, with 350 L engine. On highway at 70 mph you should get around 17 -18 MPG at 55 can get 20 MPG. The engine is only turning around 1400 rpm at 60. Around town,,well it still weighs around 6000 pounds and take energy to start. If you change the axle ratio, do not forget to change the drive gear to the speedometer or you WILL GET A TICKET!! Ha Ha
Check your ignition timing. Spec is 8 degrees before. Try increasing, slowly, to MAX 12, but watch out for spark knock. If your egr valve got stuck or the vacuum line got clogged,,the engine will run better,,,but I am not telling you to do that.

Install a set of headers on it. Put in a K&N air filter. If you're lucky, you might get another 2-3 MPG from this. I have a '94 gmc Yukon, and that's about the result I got from doing the above, plus I put in a 3" CAt converter and a hooker exhaust system, plus a Powerdyne throttle body spacer. The V8's just are pigs on gas in these vehicles.

Suburbans are PAINFUL!! I know, because I was hit by a '92 4 years ago, I kid you not!
Okay, lets see, let's say you don't have a family to put in it.
Tear out the rear seats (if any). Replace the engine with a biodisel friendly one, drop it (lower suspension), new exhaust system. A smaller gas tank, tear out anything you don't need, bed cover, hitch up, swap the steel wheels for some nice 26 inch aluminums.
That's all I can think of.

Get a Tornado air intake device. Cost about $50.00. This will give you 3-5 mpg increase.

well i would half to agree with drag1line. but if you have the money the last thing you could do is go for a TPI install. go to summitracing.com and they have a few different kits to choose from.
