There is no law of which I am aware making it illegal to take photos of aircraft. It is, however, illegal to shine a light at an aircraft sufficiently bright to impair the operation of the aircraft with the intent to interfere with that operation. (Penal Code section 248.) So flash photography might be a bad idea.

After 9/11 there are a lot more people worried about things. I don't think that I am racist or prejudiced. I grew up in a mixed nieghborhood and have worked a lot in the middle east, but if a Muslim looking person boarded a plane I would wonder if he had any terrorists ties. I think it is only natural to question anything today. I am sure all of us have developed some mental profile of what a terrorists might look like or act like. One or two pictures of an airplane is fine, but many pictures of an airport might get me thinking.

Being an avid fan of aircraft and taking pictures of them, I believe the police do have a responsibility in seeing that aircraft photographers do not impair the security of airports and their approaches. I also think they have a responsibility to see that we don't impede the flow of traffic in and around airports.
