My question is when a nuclear powerr plant like "three mile island" leaks and has an accident where they leak nuclear waste and they must shut down the reactor? I am also wondering how do they seal off the reactor or core and how do they keep they core from melting through its containment camber ?

Reactors have minor leaks all the time. It's usually just a cup or 2 of water, rarely even the slightest radioactivity and not a problem. Fittings leak, screws loosen, seals degrade.... Even the smallest problem is logged. There is a big difference between the primary coolant loop, which circulates around the core and secondard and other loops which do not. There are usually 2 or more backup cooling systems available. Reactors may not need to be shut down for a few drops in a non-critical system.

Remember, that more people have been killed in Senator Kennedy's car, than were by Three Mile Island..... and it would be wise to get used to Nuclear Power, as at present it's the only realistic alternative to fossil fuels and increased global warming.

the protection negative aspects are not any more proper ones. evaluate what the catastrophic failure at Chernobyl did to the encircling nation-state/the those that inhabited it. definite, I extra than likely had an opinion about nuclear power pre-Japan. the jap disaster has in straightforward words bolstered my anti-nuclear ascertain. I stay in the the 50-mile radius of a nuclear power plant. no longer too extremely joyful about that actuality, yet i do not truly have any possible recommendations relocation-smart on the instant. advance image voltaic/wind/hydro/geothermal sources of power everywhere you may even as phasing out both fossil fuels and nuclear jointly. study the thanks to guard extra effectual, too.
