If their parents did not teach etiquette to them, don't expect them to learn from you. It is probably how they and their parents ate at home at home. You can do anything to help them. They would not understand.

I would imagine they don't change because it bothers you so much.
Keep in mind that it is also impolite to point things like that out to people more than one time. I have found that some people are very contrary, and if you ask them not to do something, they will continue to do it just to annoy you.
Try to ignore them. Sooner of later, they will make fools of themselves in front of someone and be very embarrassed, and then the behavior will most likely stop.
Also, please keep one other thing in mind. While I doubt that either of your friends has a problem chewing with their mouths closed, there are some people who are unable to eat with a closed mouth. Usually it is because of either breathing problems (usually a problem in the nose) or because of swallowing problems. Be cautious about who you call on the carpet for eating that way, because you just may run into one of those people some day, and you will feel horrible when you find out it's the only way they can eat.

No body cares anymore that they don't look good eatting with their mouths open. It could be habitual or they just don't think it's that big an issue. It can be gross to you but it's comfortable for them, and rarely anybody goes out of their way to help any feel better or atleast more comfortable anymore.
Also it is believed you eat faster with our mouth open, food is better digested because when you eat with your mouth open you more thoroughly chew your food. -shrug- who knows what they think?

sometimes it's a habit. but when someone has a stuffy nose, they need to chew with their mouths open to get some air in.

Yes, it's disgusting and rude, but if a person isn't corrected from this habit when they are young, it can be a difficult one to break. Keep bringing it up, though...hopefully they'll be able to overcome it!

Because habits are hard to break. Have you ever tried to change a bad habit? Sometimes it takes many attempts to change.
