I am looking to get a bull mastiff dog. I have already got an American Bulldog who is 7 months old. He is quite dominant (not aggressive) and i wondered what type of dog a bull mastiff is. I would like to hear from people who own them.

My dog is going to a professional dog trainer and has been through puppy class and is now doing the intermediate level so that is how i know he is dominant. I have read thoroughly about this breed before i got it and i can control my dog well. It is just a constant battle to train him and everything i do with him is through positive reinforcement.

They are the sweetest dogs ever. Me and my neighbor both have had bull mastiffs. They think they are lap dogs so watch out. Bull mastiffs don't put up with crop from other dogs either, your other dog has a good chance of being in his place.

Bullmastiffs are wonderful dogs but why would you want to get another dog when yours is only 7 months old. If your pup is dominant and you are struggling with him then adding another dog to the household will only make things worse. What does your trainer say about it? Having two bull breeds could be a problem although not necessarily. Why not enjoy your dog and train him properly, socialise him with other dogs then in a couple of years think about getting another.

First off, what makes you think your Bulldog is dominant? Most dogs are not dominant, and most dominance theory is not helpful in teaching dogs since it is not true.

If your Bulldog is only 7 months old, and you already think he's quite dominant, you may want to put off getting another dog. Take your current dog to a trainer who uses positive reinforcement and learn to use NILIF. You should not be adding another dog if you haven't got control over the one you do have.

If you do get a Bull Mastiff, get an older female, or wait until your dog is older and get a young female. Different gender and ages tend to get along better.

Well i know where your coming from as i have a 4yr old bi tch who isn't exactly dominant but she's very highly strung and stubborn.Personally i wouldn't go for a bull mastiff, they also can have a dominant streak in them esp the males which could cause problems between them both.I would go for something more placid, slightly smaller, and defiantly a bi tch.

i've never owned one myself but, my vet had one. he would bring him to the office everyday. he was a great dog. very friendly and loving. he wasn't a barker at all and never growled at the clients. not even the other dogs. the best way to know about the breed is to get yourself a dog dictionary or contact a breader. some mastiffs can be aggresive but the one i know has never been. i think a lot depends on the owner. good luck.
