deepends, paid company will have a uniform of some sort, usually pants or shorts and a t-shirt. Me as a volunteer i have whatever i happen to be wearing when we get the call.

Turn-out gear is very hot and heavy for obvious safety reasons.Also very expensive ( nowadays , probably 1 K per fireman). Even in freezing weather, they are open to de-hydration. Not to mention burning up. Most I know where t-shirts and lite weight outfits. When the call comes in they pull on the bunker pants and the rest of the turn-out gear and go.
Worked with these boys for years. Been in 3 burning buildings myself and smoked a whole lot prior to retirement, but being in a burning building will kick your hiney. These boys do more than a cop ever would. they might even be slightly goofier than cops. But we all hang together. If we in-fight, don't step in. Police and Fire can do that but if you step in, both will turn on you.
