What are the characteristics of intonation, structure, rhythm and velocity of Puerto Rican Spanish?

I have a project for my fonetics class in which we have to describe how Puerto Rican Spanish is characterized.

I am not from Puerto Rico, and I am not a language expert, but this is what I would say about the Spanish I've heard from Puerto Rican friends:

Intonation: Caribbean; they eat the "s" or pronounce it like an "j", so the word "fósforo" becomes "fóforo" or "fójforo". They can switch the R sound for an "L" sound, so we tease them as being from "Puelto Lico".

Structure= they use a lot of American words, and can say things backwards or as Americans would. For example, they would say ¿Cómo tú estás? instead of the correct Spanish phrase ¿Cómo estás? or "Ya te llamo pa' atrás", meaning I'll call you back". In correct Spanish you would say "ya te vuelvo a llamar, or "ya te llamo"

Rythim= They do not "sing", it is -------- even, not many ups and downs in tone. They usually do speak loud.

Velocity = fast

Dooder, if this is for a university linguistics course you should be researching databases. Unless, people have studied phonetics they won't know how to respond to your question, even if they are native speakers. That said, I've studied linguistics and actually did research on this topic (not puerto rican spanish, but central and south america). There's so much to say, but to keep it simple: 1) velarización del fonema /rr/ -- /rr/ = /x/ (don't have linguistic symbols on my comp, but the RR is suppose to be one R with a line over it); 2) laterización del fonema /r/ -- /r/= /l/; 3) velarización del fonema /f/ = /x/; 4) /s/ is omitted (sinestesia). There's probably some more $hit, can't recall at the moment though... those should be the major ones. Research the MLA databse dood.

Do a Google or Yahoo search on Cartilla Fonetica. That s a small booklet that we use in Puerto Rico to teach in grammar school to read. My mom used it with me, and I'm 39. That book is still for sale, therefore it most work!

ok im puerto rican we talk normal spanish but we talk like different i dunno how to explain it maybe you should elaborate ur question more ...but umm we like say stuff like instead of como estas we shorten stuff we say como eta or like we use the l and r alot like (love) is amor we say amol and cuerpo (body) we say cuelpo arroz (rice) (ahoz )para donde vas (where are you going) we say (pa donde tu va) dos is two we say (do) we dont pronouce the (s) mas means more we say(ma) te gusta means u like we say(te guta) we abbreviate stuff hope this helped
