I am looking to get an M1 Garand for the history, plinking targets, and because I like guns.

I found this M1 for $750. Is it a good deal or should I hold out for something a little cheaper and / or a little better?
Sellers description below:

"Springfield, early 43 dated receiver, with a
50 date replacement barrel. If I remember right, it guages a 2 on throat, and a 1 on muzzle. It is basically a Service Grade rifle. I bought it at the CMP South Store. I have changed both handguards to walnut."

Bound's hubby here:

Well, a Springfield receiver made in '43 with a '50 barrel can be considered common ... with a chamber throat of 2 and a muzzle gauge of 1, that is very good, you should not have to replace the barrel all that soon. Personally, I think $750 is a bit steep ... however!

I have three DCM/CMP Garands. My most recent was a Greek "Lend-Lease" that I bought from CMP in '04 for $295. The rifle was marked as having a throat gauged as a 4 and the muzzle at 3. I replaced the wood ($89). I need to replace the barrel, but it still holds the 8 ring at 200 yards, which really is not all that bad ... I want it to shoot tighter.

The problem is, the CMP is currently out of Garands [see link: http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/m1garand.htm ] and this will drive up the price of any Garand that you find. CMP says they will resume accepting orders around October, if you want to wait. While $750 seems steep to me, it may actually prove to be quite a deal in the long run, depending on how badly you want a Garand.

Personally, I am spoiled with Garand pricing ...
My early (low) 6 digit Springfield cost me $168 from the DCM in the early '90s.
My 3.8 Million DCM H&R was bought from a local gunshop for $400.
My 4 Million CMP H&R was bought from the CMP for $300.
I would take my chances and wait for the CMP to replenish their Garand inventory, but I have the luxury of already having a Garand or two ... you don't (no offense intended). It all comes down to how quickly you want to give up your $750. Considering the current market, $750 could be a very fair price.

Good luck!

Its a perfect deal! The cheapest deal my Dad and I could find was $1,000 for one in very good shape, we got ours a few months ago. GET IT! Ours has a 1944 barrel too!

Get it now! I've seen some in unbelievably great shape for over 2,000. If yours looks and feel like it is brand new get it before someone else gets it.
