Currently I work with teens as a volunteer youth pastor for my church. For me girls have always been the hardest to entertain, especially in light of how incredibly easy it is to get a boy to have fun. Throw two 24 packs of Mountain Dew and a computer LAN network together and you could keep a group of boys happy for a few days.
For the girls I've found that they seem to like one on one personal time much more; such as seeing a funny-teen-romance comedy, then talking about what's going on over ice-cream.
In all reality all teens are different from one another, and what works best for one parent may not work well at all with your daughter. I would suggest taking a moment to ask her what she would like to do on a weekend. Maybe a road trip is in order, or a visit to the beach (if you don't live on the coast already).
Put yourself in a situation where it's just you and her with little to no distractions. That way you both can talk, laugh a little, while getting to feel a little bit more like a family.

My daughter and I have a special thing. She is 14 also. When I need to go to the store (we have 3 kids total) I always load her up and take her with me. No books, no radio allowed. We talk all the way there, the whole time we are there and all the way home. We have had some of our best talks in the truck and she looks forward to it each time we go.
On the weekends when my husband is sleeping and the little ones are in bed she and I usually talk some more. We talk about everything, boys, friends, music, God, sex, everything you can imagine. We have a very open and honest relationship and I feel that our talks have been the biggest part of that happening. She enjoys the one on one time with me outside of my responsibilities where we can just vent.

Well, I'm a 17yr old girl, and my mom and I dont exactly have the best relationship, like we say maybe 5 words to eachother every day, which really sucks... So we decided that we were going to drive 3 hours south one weekend to go shopping, just the 2 of us... Take the weekend off from everything else and spend a bit of time together... We havent done it yet, but its something lots of my friends do with their mom...

Try one of those pottery painting places, bargain hunting (you always find funny stuff at goodwill), give eachother pedicures and let her pick your nail polish, make cookies together, and my favorite with my mom was always when she took me out for appetizers, or even to play pool with my friends.
Just remember, at 14, she is right inbetween the little girl and the teenage stages, and still wants mommie, not just a buddy. Hope you have fun finding what works for you!

I think a day out at the spa (getting facials, pedis, manis, etc...) or, a girl's favorite, SHOPPING is a great way to get close. But then again... not all girls are girly or into that... so get to REALLY know your daughter's likes and dislikes, compile them and devote a whole day to her.
I wish I could do this with my mom~
She's really busy and I only see her when she drops me off at school and at night when she comes home. (She occasionally drops by)

aww! your going to make me cry. my mom never does anything like that with me. she never tries to make time. you are awesome!! i would suggest baking, just talking, telling stories and jokes, go for a short walk, go somewhere where she has never been before (antique store, flea market, out for dinner,ect.). it doesnt really matter 'what' you do, as long as it is enjoyable, and you both are connecting with each other. i would enjoy doing anything with my mom. have fun with your daughter!
thats really awesome that you want to be active in your childs life!

My Mom and I used to play "hangman", and 500 rummy for hours. Let me know if you need rules for 500. And of course, there's always SHOPPING!!
