Since it's an American's right to bear arms, what about others? I'm a Canadian citizen working on becoming a citizen of the U.S. I have been married to my wife (who is American) for over 2 years. Should I be able to purchase a gun even though I'm not a natural born citizen?

yes, you, and others should be.

i think that there should definitely be background checks on the person buying, and if they're already doing that, then they should be a heck of a lot more thorough.

but as for people buying guns.. it's a universal right. the right to bear arms. it's the second amendment in the bill of rights. in my opinion, those apply to everyone within the U.S. borders.

Most states allow people with Green Cards (permanent residents) to own guns, although it's usually more restricted than it is for citizens.

My personal opinion is that once you are an American citizen and abide by the laws where you reside to obtain a gun, then you should be able to own one.

I believe legal residents can purchase firearms, though there's some extra paperwork involved, and you have to demonstrate residency.

The only reason I could see to disallow that, might be if the background check couldn't be performed due to lack of coordination with agencies in the residents country of origin (or lack of dependable records in that country at all).

It has nothing to do with nationality or race.

I think if more Americans were able to carry arms that guys would have been taken out before he killed 32 and injured 28 people.

:) My hubby of 14 years is a Canadian citizen too!!

If you are a legal permanent resident, you currently can. I don't know. Maybe it should just be citizens, but I'm not sure.

(I don't mean that as a reflection on what happened at VT; that was freakish and if some legal resident student besides the shooter had had a gun, it might have saved lives.)

I just haven't thought it through.

even america citizens shouldn't be allowed to purchase guns. we kill each other too readily. No one needs a gun for "self defense". For hunting, sure... I can see that... but hand guns and automatic weapons are completely unnecessary.

Your family will be safer if you DON'T own a firearm. Your kids will end up shooting themselves or you or their friends. You'll shoot some guy who you think is breaking into your house just to find out its only your drunk neighbor and he got the wrong house.... but it'll be too late when you turn on the lights cuz you already shot him.

No, if they want to purchase a gun, let them do it in their own country. It's not like we need more customers, we have plenty....Thank you very much.

And here we go blaming it on immigrants again. It's ok when a native white person does it in Columbiana, but when someone from another country because of adopting the very bad things of our culture does then its all the immigrants' fault. If both natives and immigrants do it, and immigrants don't do it in their home countries, doesn't that mean that there is something definitely wrong in our own culture?
