In small amounts, say around top of tub, can tile be applied directly to drywall?

I would like to put a small decorative tile boarder around the top of my tub and didn't know if I would have to install the tile backer just fot that little bit.

If you are not having problems with the existing drywall swelling around the tub, you should not have any problems. Hopefully the builder used green board around the tub.

I don't see why not, just make sure that you use water proof glue/cement
