Atheists can say hello if they wish. As a believer you probably know the Bible teaches accepting others, so accept him as well!

Yes, we communicate and are polite to people when they've done nothing wrong to us. This Atheist was being friendly, that's how humans are supposed to treat each other...and yes, what made you think they were Atheist? Was it because they weren't drooling?
