I just got a piercing a year ago. It still gets red whenever I get a bad cold and I have to blow my nose a lot. It also gets more red around the piercing if I get sunburned a bit, even if the rest of my face does, plus I avoid getting sunscreen in it so unless I'm planning on going out in the sun I don't put sunscreen near it.

I work in the medical field. I have patients that will tell me, out of the blue, that "oh, your nosering is infected" or "your nose ring doesnt look good, is it still healing?" Like I don't own a mirror! I dont point out the obvious to them "oh, look you're still fat, still haven't done anything about that yet?" I just feel like it is flat out rude. You don't have to like my piercing, but I like it and it is very small and concervative.

I just get so upset every time and it makes me angry, but I can't say what I want to say. Something like "none of your f****** buisness!" What can I say that is professional, but gets the point across?

It is not infected. There is no puss, just redness.

My coworkers don't care, it is my patients (only the obnoxious, normally rude ones) that say stuff like this.

I can't take it out because nasal piercings close up really quickly. 1-3 hours.

It isn't always red. Usually it looks great. I just had a bad flu during the last two weeks and I couldn't get time off because we are short two people, so I had to work while I was sick, plus I got these stupid comments. My coworkers aren't the problem, they probably don't even notice it. They know I'm working with the flu. I guess I also am less tolerant when I'm sick.

It's a very ovbvious, easy observation, since it's on your face. And since these people work with you, they still have to see you everyday. Perhaps they don't find it appealing, but they still have to endure it.

Why is it red? If you've had it pierced a year ago, I really don't see why there is any redding or infection going on.

when you get a cold, or when you blow you nose alot, just remove your piercing. Take it when you're in the sun and maybe it won't be so bad.
Just ignore the comments, or keep repeating thanks for your concern and walk away.

When I had my vert. labret done, I met a friend a few hours after the piercing, who insisted that it was infected because it was red. I tried explaining to him that it was a few hours old, he insisted I was going to die because of the bad infection.

Point of my story: People think they know a lot more than you do and inisit upon proving their ignorance.

I'm a pro piercer, and also work in the medical field (ambulance), I know my way around piercings and the potential problems with them. I'm constantly arguing with people over this type of thing. Piercings act up if you get overtired/stressed/sick (hmm...working in the medical field that would never happen! - yeah right!) I've had people point the same thing out to me.

I usually go with "it's a good thing I'm a medic, so I know how to deal with it!" Just insert your job title in there. It's not the most polite thing, but it gets the point across without being too rude (although the fat thing is really, really tempting.....)

Try to think of it as concern over your well being. They're trying to help you avoid an infection, which I think is a nice thing to do. Don't let it get to you...really, they have good intentions.

My only other recommendation is to keep your piercings away from your face...I know you say you like it, but you should be aware that it's going to be that much more noticeable because of the fact that it's right there, where everyone is looking. If the comments bother you, getting rid of the piercing will make them go away.

Just say, no it's fine, it just gets red when... and tell them. They'll stop asking then.

That is weird though, I've never known anyone to get a piercing and have it go red and stuff (not even my own piercing)... but everyone's different.

my friend had her eye brow pierced and hers was always red. It looked nasty, as in trashy. Your co-workers won't tell you that because they don't want to offend you or hurt your feelings. So, you had rather someone lie to your face and tell you it is ok, then some one telling the honest truth. I am almost 100% sure the ones you think like it talk about how gross it looks. It looks infected. It doesn't look natural and cool if it looks irritated! The sting of your patients honesty should sink in soon. Swallow your pride.

they just need something to talk about... people feel smart when they notice things on their own, surprise surprise. just tell them "thanks for letting me know, i'll see what i can do." or something along those lines. you don't have to get the point across to them that it's annoying, because they don't know other people point it out, too. just smile inwardly at the comment and you'll feel better.

maybe they are nervous about whatever they're in the doctor's office for and are trying to make small talk.
