For some reason when i get too far away from a local AM station here, i can only hear the loud parts of the radio transmission. What are the reasons for this?

You have a carrier frequency and the audio is placed on the freq. Your radio is not sensitive enough to get the whole signal and you may have a squelch circuit on the radio to make it quiet until you get a signal. The loud part of the song may give your radio enough of a signal to break the squelch and let the musci through.
It could be a bad antenna connection too. See if you can find a 12V signal amplifier to help out. good luck
