So basically within the past couple weeks I have had major joint pain mostly starting in the back and has now come to the ankles, knees, hips especially and some shoulder pain. I have not gained a lot of weight, pretty positive I am not growing anymore, no known diseases and no eating disorders. I consume a ton of calcium but is arthritis possible? Please no suggestions of a chiropractor I went to one who adjusted me once and then wanted me on a "plan" for a year which cost $4,000 only adding to the suspicions of quackery. Supplement suggestions are encouraged and experience is welcomed as well. Should I see a doctor?

I do consume quite a bit of calcium as well as "white" foods like carb gosh I love my bread, potatoes, cereals....that may have something dietary to do with it? As far as calcium goes I have at least one cup a day and upwards of 5 cups per day not taking into account cheese or others.

First off, do not go to a chiropractor as a first step. I personally am not a big fan of them, but they should only be used as a last resort if no other treatment options have helped.

I would certainly see your doctor because there are MANY possible reasons for joint pain. A good reference source is http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/symptoms/joint_pain/causes.htm. Don't get too paranoid by some of the serious conditions listed.

But certainly go through your physician first. If they find nothing clinically evident causing this probelm you should see a physiotherapist (who may recommend massage therapy) and your local pharmacy for adjunct therapy (eg. supplements, creams).

Hi Misschick. I am a Chiropractor. Most Chiropractors do not propose one year treatment plans. Do not judge a profession based on one bad apple.

Your symptoms suggest that something is definitely wrong, and one or more professional consultations is appropriate for you.

First, you say you 'consume a ton of calcium'. Just how much are you consuming daily? Excessive calcium intake can cause deposition of calcium into soft tissues, muscles and joints. This is one possible cause of your symptoms.

You may also be developing an autoimmune disease. This should be considered by your doctor.

You may have a gastrointestinal problem and/or food allergy/intolerance. Again, these possibilities need to be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.

Best wishes and good luck.

you have been given great advice already but to answer your question of whether arthritis is possible, yes it is. I was diagnosed at 21. I also agree that you should see a doctor to see what is causing your symptoms.
