Remeber you're hot and sweaty, feeling dehydrated and it's near the end of the day.

They seem to be doing something there. They look up and see you, and your patrol. There seems to be something in their hands.
When they realise who you are they bolt off in the direction of the other side of the road. They look like they have
assault rifles. What do you do?

A: Shoot them (ask questions later)
B: Try to apprehend them.
C: Stop the patrol (let's say you have vehicles). Call the Bomb
disposal unit.

(1) You don't see Iraqis out after curfew, unless they're IA, IP, drunk, or dead.

(2) Since this is now by default occuring in daylight, if you can't identify if a pair is armed at 50m from the way they carry themselves (even with Krinkovs), or identify what they have in their hands (if it's a major item such as a shovel) you probably need prescription lenses, or need to be put on some permanent FOB detail, never to leave the wire again. Especially if they start running and you can't see a slung weapon banging against the torso, or waving in the hands.

(3) Running from Americans is not justification for shooting them. That's a good way to get UCMJ'd and end up in Leavenworth or Quantico. You're not going to catch them carrying nearly your own body weight in body armor, weapons, ammunition, etc. There is just no way that is ever happening, no matter how fit ou are.

(4) If I was mounted (that's in a vehicle) in the first place, with an IA or IP detachment with me (patrols in Iraq are nowadays joint endeavours) then they can chase the two down. They know the streets better. Dismounted, same deal. Let the IA or IP run them down.

As for what else happens, such as calling for EOD support, that ventures very much into talking about TTPs, so no answer here on open source.

And as for being hot and sweaty, you get used to it. Being dehydrated? Not likely unless you're stupid. Even if you're stupid, you should still have the CFLCC ROE card on you anyways.

Being hot, sweaty, or dehydrated is no excuse for committing murder on local nationals. That's bottom line.

Supposing we are in vehicles we would not to shot till positive identifications of the rifles and then according to the situation if they really armed we shot and in both cases we have to call the bomb disposal unit

Follow the rules of engagement--stop your patrol, don't block traffic, observe any non combatants that might be hurt and don't point any weapons in their direction, call headquarters, explain the situation, wait for confirmation, pick up your dead buddies because of rules of engagements!!

B

ROE prohibits shooting on mere suspicion alone, and you don't call for bomb disposal until you know there's a bomb.
