my opinion is this life MUST have some reason.not just ,live die........
my source is the bible, obviously an atheist has chosen not to believe that for various reasons and everybody is entitled to their views...
no I am not a sheep,I too Q the bible, naturally but came to realise everything happening NOW it says in the bible.that is my proof, amongst other reasons.
how can people say it is science when we dont even know half the human body and never will.I have loads more to say,but this will do for now.

the time here is soo short compared to the time in heaven or hell. the Q of why does god need us to worship him,is not because he needs us to ,its because we need to choose and come to him ourselves.

Most Atheists are like the guy in the parable who was given one talent of gold and he hid it in a hole in the ground. When asked why he didn't invest it into a bank.He replied that he thought the master was mean and was afraid he would loose the one talent. They just don't want to play ball. How boring ,just as well they are few in number.

My individual purpose?

I'd like to adopt two young children, internationally most likely. I can't spread my genes for reasons that are too complicated and psychological for me to describe here. I also might adopt an older child from foster care before the adoptions.

I grew up in a very turbulent household. I'd like to prove deep down inside myself that I share nothing with my parents but name. I will love, guide, and always be there for my children.

I would like to help as many people along the way as I can, hopefully leave the world a better place for my grandchildren than it was for me.

Just because we don't need a purpose from ancient books does not mean we do not have a reason to live. Life is a beautiful, miraculous event, and is inherently meaningless. We make our own purpose, that is what is beautiful about life.

My immediate purpose appears to be to enlighten deluded theists. My ultimate purpose is to leave life a better experience for my fellow human beings than when I started it.

You seem to be equating "purpose" with "recognition" of your importance. Life for you is apparently about "winning" rather than accomplishing anything useful. When the game is over, does it really matter how many points, treasures or "get out of jail free" cards you collect? Do you insist on continuing to play? My fellow creatures aer not opponents or playing pieces in my salvation game. It's not all about me.

I value relationships, the chance to enjoy life without the guilt of being a jerk, a feeling of accomplishment without becoming obsessed about it, and the challenge of living in the present and taking life as it comes. I can be a good sport too. When my time is up, I may whimper a little, but I can accept that everyone needs to take their turn. I certainly don't expect some "creator" to compensate me for the trouble of living a life.

All things pass. Individuals should be treasured and cared for while they are with us, and remembered when they are gone. But we all fade in time. No one actually "remembers" real people beyond a few generations. Why should I insist on being any different? If the entire human species were wiped out, THAT would be a waste. Yet for some reason, theists don't seem to value that as much as their own individual "survival". Me, I'm not that arrogant.

Why do you find it necessary to assign a purpose to our existence?
If life has a purpose, it is just to live - to follow the instructions that our DNA give us to self-replicate.
There is nothing special about human life except that we have evolved brains complex enough to ask such questions.

BTW, this life-without-purpose idea is not an argument for not respecting and treasuring life, in fact, this idea leads to a greater respect for life - now, in the real world. Simple observations of how humans interact with one another should lead one to the logical conclusion that we are more efficient, productive and successful as a species when we work together, help one another, and get along with each other.

Believing that there is a better life beyond this one (an afterlife, heaven, paradise, etc.) leads to carelessness and lack of respect for this life, which is the only real one we have.

I don't think I'd say that there is a "purpose", because that would imply that it was somehow pre-planned.
That isn't to say that once I'm here, I want my life to be without meaning or significance. I'm a good person. I'm a faithful wife, devoted mother, loving daughter and friend, and a good and helpful neighbor. I do volunteer work, and donate to charity. I hope to be someone who leaves the world a little bit better a place than when I got here.
If anyone would judge me to be a bad or immoral person, (like the people who say atheists just want to "do whatever they want without consequences") then I would question what their morals are if they judge me based solely on the idea that I don't share a belief in THEIR deity.

I've answered this question too many times already, excuse me if I seem a tad laconic.

Objectively: there is no 'purpose' to an individual life. purposes and goals are human concepts. They don't map well to nature. And we are the result of natural processes.

That said, every human finds some purpose in life. When our evolutionary path led to self-awareness it was nearly inevitable. When I asked this question a lot of the women answered 'children'. Which was reassuring but also indicative of the forces which shapes our lives.

My purpose is to live my life, have fun, be a good person, enjoy my life here and try to help people, Animals and the Earth in whatever way I can. I like to make people smile and laugh. I always get compliments about having a good heart. I love Animals and do what I can to help end their suffering. I hate that the Earth is being destroyed and try in my own little ways to help save it. I love my family and I don't drink, smoke or do drugs. See, being Atheist isn't anything like you guys stereotype us to be. Just because a person isn't christian, doesn't mean their life has no meaning!

I'm not an atheist, but an agnostic. I guess I'm just waiting to find out- chances are I won't know til it happens, and even then there's no saying that it'll be the same for everyone. I like to think that birth and death are the two inevitable things in life, and the bit in between should be enjoyed to the best of your abilities!

i don't think you actually understand anything at all about atheists.and yet i know your bible back to front in the belief that you need to know what your talking about before you can comment on something.I'm atheist and believe in a spirit world.you are here through an accident of nature.its called, natural selection.just like the dinosaurs were.man will in fact have the shortest history on this earth than any other species.you are merely just another being nature created.

Well what's yours? To go to see your God? Then what? If when religious people die they go to see God as the ultimate end to their journey, then why does he not skip the living bit and whack you straight up there. Also, if you all believe that heaven is the place you want to be then why do you all grieve when someone you love dies.? You bang on about how Jesus died for us, but according to you lot he went to meet the God you all can't wait to meet anyway. I'd be green with envy not weeping and whaling!

To propagate our genes.

Now, think about what you beleive. you actually beleive that we were created for no other purpose than to worship an omnipresent, omniscient, omnibenevolent God.

Why would a God need the equivalant of ant-peons worshipping Him? Is he that egotistical? He is allegedly the Greatest, most Perfect Being to ever exist - yet he needs us to worship Him?

Whats your opinion?
