The brick could very well have salts in it. Don't let him do it though, it's bad for his teeth. Maybe put vinegar or lemon juice on it. As for the nibbling, you really should have a vet take a look at it. It could be a lot of things.

we could do with a little more info ..... but il try my best. dogs are compelled to chew and bite things , it feels good to them , it helps keep there jaw muscles strong and there teeth healthy, do you have plenty of toys that your dog can play with, chew and gnaw on , you no the type, the ones that go all white and horrible after they have been chewing a few Min's lol , if you do then when it knows on the fireplace , try and distract him with a game using one of his toys . most dogs will lick or nibble there paws if they are bored , so maybe this is a symptom of that, or he might have a irritation of some sort , if the area looks sore take him for a check up at the vets , hope this helps :)
