In answer to what most people have said about Hills - it was only their m/d that was recalled, and that was voluntary. I believe they did it because they were starting to come into the line of fire as everyone got hysterical over the recalls - there is nothing wrong with any Hills products, I do not know of any recorded incidents of trouble.
As for the first answerer - what the f....? Hills and Iams (certainly Hills) are made by actual nutrition companies, not just supermarkets. How you can put them down their with supermarket brands I don't know. I can vouch for Hills, I use all their prescription and Science diets all the time, with excellent results. Especially r/d.
ANYWAY, to answer your question - I'll give you the websites to help you make up your own mind, but I'd say Hills because they're my number 1 fave brand. I understand Iams is good too, I'm just not so familiar.

I feed my kitties Iams for the last five years. Recently (because of the food recalls) I switched to Avoderm. I have never seen them more energetic. Also, their coats are softer and they shed less. I can't believe how much they have changed since their diet has changed. Don't go with Iams. I wouldn't go with the other either, its the same thing in a different label - crap.

Neither one of these foods are any good. They are over priced, full of grain, contain low quality meat sources, by products, cancer causing chemical preservatives and god only know's what. Rendered products and by-products in pet food are down right scary, cause just about anything goes, including diseased animals, lab animals, euthanized pets and roadkill.
Start your kitten off right, seriously consider feeding a prey model raw diet. Remember that cats are obligate carnivores, they do not have the ability to break down fruits, veggies and grains into useful nutrients, they are just empty calories. It would be so easy to start her off on this now, while she's young and before she develops health problems and finicky behaviors. Here's some light reading on the subject ...

If you're not ready to go raw, please consider a higher quality, canned, commercial diet, like Nature's Variety, Wysong, Innova or Solid Gold. Canned is important for many reasons, primarily, your cat needs the moisture, and canned foods have more meat than dry foods and are better for their teeth, especially chunky canned food.

Both brands have products that have been recalled. I would consider an organic version of kitten food like Solid Gold - just until this whole recall issue has been worked out.
Both brands are pretty good otherwise -

We always use purina and we have never had any problems, besides both of those brands had products that were recalled, so I wouldn't trust either. Purina (in my opinion) is the best, we have a 19 year old cat who is as healthy as can be and she has been eating Purina her whole life

I love the Science Diet stuff. Their litter box stunk way less when they ate it (vs. Iams).
Once your kitty is fixed, stop feeding her the kitten formula immediately. It is very high in fat and she will get huge!

Both of them are on the recall list. I have used Purina and I have no problems with it. I have used it on my cat for 5 years.

i agree w/others. neither of those are what i would consider a "great" brand.
you could definitely do better. my suggestion is go to with blue buffalo spa select cat food or even felidae.
both foods are all natural, all holistic with human grade meats and veggies. there are no byproducts or "fillers".
there are so many benefits to feeding a more premium food. ideally, it usually means less vet visits, overall better health b/c they're eating and useing more of what they need instead of ingesting all the garbage they don't need, it's better for weight control b/c they're eating better quality ingredients, less shedding and less litterbox smell to name a few.
good luck!

right now i wouldn't get either... both have been involved in the pet food recall. i know it seems defeating, but the only foods which haven't been recalled are the cheaper ones, friskies, purina cat chow, meow mix... even if nutritionally they aren't AS good... i figure antyhing is better than renal failure...
