The food pyramid doesn't say you should eat only bread--it means you should eat carbohydrates, which include bread. Carbohydrates are any food which contain a lot of starches and/or sugars. The really bad carbs are things like cakes, cookies, pies, doughnuts, etc. Better carbohydrates include cereals, rice, and potatoes. You're better off sticking with carbohydrates that are less processed, like brown rice, potatoes, and whole grain breads and cereals. And watch your portions--one serving of carbohydrates is 15 carbohydrates, or about 1 slice of bread, 1 small potato, or 1/2 to 3/4 cup of cereal. The food pyramid suggests 5-7 servings of carbohydrates, if I remember right, which would at most be about a bowl of cereal for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch, a baked potato and a small roll at supper, and maybe a small cookie as a treat for a bedtime snack.

i'm not a dietitian or anything, but bread is a carbohydrate. we need carbs to keep our brains functioning. in the food pyramid, its breads, cereals, pastas, grains, etc. white potatoes have tons of carbs, and so does milk. the problem with those carbs is that you retain a lot more water when consuming them, therefore feeling and looking more bloated.

there are also carbs in other veggies (and some fruits?) that are "good" carbs. eat more of those and less of the "whites" mentioned above.

you can also buy whole wheat pastas and substitute sweet potatoes for regular potatoes.

It's recommended to eat wholemeal bread because it provides NSP (non starch polysaccaride) which makes you feel fuller. This prevents snacking on fatty or sugary foods which later leads to obesity, so bread is good from that point of view.

However eating too much carbohydrate means that your body will burn the carbs BEFORE it burns an fat (if you eat too much bread) which is why dieticians discourage people from eating lots of bread.

My recommendation is to carry on eating wholemeal/grain foods as they are beneficial to health, but don't overdo it.

The food pyramid is extremely outdated. Also the people in the era it was created didnt sit around in front of tv or computer like we do. 60+ years ago people didnt have those things and they also were more likely to be doing physical labour jobs like farming. They needed lots of food. Today we dont need to eat like that, and shouldn't.

this is a good question.
I'm not really sure.
I tried a diet where I gave up carbs and dropped weight immediately.
I also gained it back as fast.
so obviously that isn't the answer.
plus bread gives you energy from the carbs.
I'd say probably stick with whole wheat (or grain) and don't have more than 2 or 3 pieces a day.
