Protein is the only nutrient responsible for muscle building. Protein has the highest "thermic effect" of any food. That means it speeds up your metabolism because your body has to work harder to break it down. Protein is less likely to be converted to fat than any other nutrient.

It doesn't, by itself. And the fattier the meat, the worse it is for you. By eating protein, you will help keep your muscles strong. But you still need a balanced diet. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruit, less processed carbohydrates (whole wheat bread, etc.) and cut back on sugar and fat. Spread it out over the course of the day, so you don't feel hungry and binge, and you keep your metabolism from going into starvation mode. Stick to this, and you'll lose weight.
