Its in a book, the hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy by Douglas Adams.
The answer to "Life, the universe and everything" was 42.
That made no sense, but neither did the question
("What is the answer to Life, the universe and everything")
So they designed a massive supercomputer, which would contain and design life itself, so as to generate the ultimate question.
That supercomputer was the planet earth, and the designers of the earth where the most intelligent beings alive - Mice.
However, right before the answer (or rather, the question) was about to be revealed, the earth was destroed to make way for an intergalctic super high-way.

Because Douglas Adams is a genius. A bloody brilliant man. The world will be much less funny with him out of it.
Read The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy for more information.

The trouble is that the original answer was wrong as the question should have been "what are five times nine?"
