You bet it is.
It's a throwback to the great middleweight wars of the mid 80's - two of the best fighters in the world going at it while still within their respective primes.
Added to that, you have the hero (De La Hoya), versus the (self-appointed) villain, Mayweather, whose respective styles should make for one helluva fight.
And - HBO has brilliantly taken advantage of the reality TV phenomenon, building a weekly reality show around the fight, which is only three weeks hence, further generating interest in it, and possibly creating new fans along the way.

I think so, because it's the biggest fight in boxing right now and that's what the sport needs, more of the top fighters willing to face each other. And this fight is bringing the casual fans back to the sport. My neighbor's wife, who is 67 years old, is interested in this fight because she thinks Oscar is cute, as she put it, and she saw a preview of 24/7. She didn't even know who Floyd was but it made her angry when Floyd was in Oscar's face, and now her and her husband are going to order the fight just to see Oscar beat Floyd. When casual fans like that are interested, it's always better for the sport because us die hard fans will always be there for boxing. Now if the fight lives up to all the mega-hype, then that's even better for the sport.

i think it will be good for boxing, too often we see the big names avoid each other, because one or both is afraid or just too damn greedy. just look at the non existence of a Calzaghe vs Kessler unification match to see this.
