yes you can legally own a military spec m-16 if it was produced prior to 1986. You must apply and be approved for a class 3 federal firearm license (automatic firearms license)
you need a separate license for each one you own and it cost $300
Most people have been taught otherwise, but you can own a silencer in most places also!

The real question is why would you need or want a M16? An AR15 with 20 or 30 rounds magazines should be sufficient firepower for just about any occasion. Full auto fire is seldom accurate and there are very few situations you would ever find yourself in that would require full auto. I own 3 different 5.56mm (.223 cal) semi-auto rifles and rate the AR15 as a very fine weapon. The best 5.56mm rifle I have is a German HK93 which is becoming quite rare nowadays. My feelings are that accuracy is much more important than automatic fire.

If you live in Nevada- you can own a M16. I am currently living in Las Vegas, NV and have an arsenal of weapons. I go to the indoor gun range about once a month and use my M16 here. If you're in town- send me a message.

In most states, the M16 is classified as an assault rifle, and is illegal for an individual to own. The problem is that you have the selector switch that can go from safe to semi-automatic (which would be legal) to automatic (which is forbidden).

The AR15 is, to all intents and purposes, an M16, but is legal to won because it can ONLY fire in semi-automatic mode.

P.S. - I agree with Misanthrope below -- Gun Control is being able to hit your target. 8^)

M-4's M-16A2's, and M-16A4's all have 3 round burst capability therefore they are considered "automatic weapons."

You can buy the civilian versions that do not have 3-round burst capability.

Semi-automatic weapons are legal, automatic weapons are not without a class III firearms license.

The only people I have met who have a class III firearms license are gunsmiths who make weapons for the police.

I have seen loads of AR-15's and I think they are the civilian legal alternative. M-16's are still being used and have features which prohibit them for being sold such as full auto conversion kits or 3-burst. This is my take on the selling of m-16's.

M16's can be demilled, which means of course, demilitarized and turned into semi-auto fire only weapons, and therefore, you wouldn't need that autoweapon permit..
As for silencers, don't know when they became legal..

The MK-19 automatic grenade launcher is a military weapon.

You could probably take over a whole town using 1 Browning .50cal Machine Gun. Those things will shoot through brick walls.
