I was diagnosed at age 39. Meds helped alot, and so did knowing I had it and adapting, including finding a more suitable job.

Don't listen to people who think they know what the real cause is or that drugs are dangerous, yada yada yada - do what's right for you and your son and listen to the professionals.

Hi, I also have severe adult ADHD, and problems do occur a lot more frequently than once a week. It is true that a lot of the behavdiour is not under his control, but he can do things to make life more tolerable for those around him. Medication is the big key. ADHD is a mediccal condition and itt requires medical treatment. He may not be able to choose not to be agressive butr he can choose too takle medication to control it. You need to be upfront with him. His behaviour is damaging the family and if he isnt prepared to take medication to help moderate his behaviour then his family should not be prepared to continually put up with the abuse. If he cares as much about his family as they seem to care about him then he will consider medication. If he is already on medicatio then it needs to be relooked at to make sure it is effective enough. At the times where he states he doesnt have any control he needs to remove himself from his loved ones so as not to hurt them He may not be able to do this in which case you need to remove yourself. If he gets angry simply state that you will return soon when things are calmer and you can discuss this further. If you state that you will return soon and remain opeen to him it will calm him.

my 25 year old daughter has ADD. She hates to take medications. So, she knows when she needs it. She took some for a couple of years and she will start again when she feels it affecting her life. She also needed an anti depresset.

Personally I have some adult ADD, I am not taking any medication right now. I have routiens that I have that keep me balanced. If I feel I need meds I will again.

There is lots of help out there.

I am 35 and have ADD, I think its similar. I take amphetamine salts ( generic adderall). It helps a lot. I used to lose my train of thought so much that I couldn't even read a magazine or ...where was I going with this...oh time for second dose. good luck =)

it's probably just irritable bowel syndrome. i would be tested for that first and then go from there.....the medications used for adhd will always have to be taken and the risk for dependency is high. over time drugs used to treat something that is overdiagnosed can cause a change in how the brain chemestry works. anotherwords, the medication used to treat adhd is only a cover up.

have him monitor his bowel movements and if there is any pain involved.....trigger foods can be anything as everyone is different.

if you find it's not ibs, then have him on strettera-its non addicting and has less side effects than that of adderrall or ritalin.

I got diagnosed with it when I was in middleschool. I refused drugs and soon changed my eating habbits. I don't have at anymore.

does he eat alot of processed foods?

DON NOT use Ritalin. it's similar to cocain.

ADD/ADHD is a trash basket diagnosis.

the actual causes of ADHD are:

Food additives,
Drugs(antibiotcs,perscription)
Food allergies(milk/corn/wheat/sugar,peanuts,molds)
refined sugar,
caninda and or parasirtes,
Craniosacral dysfunction
florescnet lights
Heavy metals.
vaccinations.

see if getting him on a anti-candida clease/diet settles him down after a while...stay away from proccesed foods, soda, MSG, white flour and sugar.

improper digestion can cause problems as well.

to me fasting is a natural cure all and can be used especially if habbits are involded(food/other) but it is very taboo among americans. but I've used it with great results.
