I feel fundamentally lucky to be alive. I am thankful for many things in life. I am thankful to my mother for raising me to think for myself and ask questions. I am thankful to my husband for loving me. I am thankful to my best friend for always being there when I need a girl to talk to.
What do I believe? A lot of things. Where can I begin? But I don’t believe in god and I don’t believe in the supernatural.
What do I do? What do you mean? I am a preschool teacher and a college student (anthropology major). I am married and I take care of a cat and sometimes I volunteer at the humane society.
--------------------------------
Well, if I said, "Oh thank god" then it would just be a figure of speech and mean very little except that I am expressing relief.

I think your question is sincere, so I will do my best to provide an honest answer.
First of all, I am very careful with my language. I never use the word "believe" if it can be avoided because that word literally means to accept as truth without supporting evidence. (A serious "sin" for a scientist.) I think "truth" is the most valuable commodity in the universe, but truth can only exist if it is supported by rational thinking and physical evidence. Although it would be extremely foolish to be grateful to the universe for creating itself, I do have a deep understanding of biological systems and can easily appreciate how life was spontaneously generated by the combination of chaos and the rules of organic chemistry. I find that absolute truth actually does exist in the realm of higher mathematics and constantly marvel at the amazing correlations between mathematics and the way the natural world is organized. I am thankful that mankind invented science, a self-correcting system of knowledge, because it is the only way to see past the limitations of human perception and understand the true nature of objective reality. The last and greatest thing I am thankful for is that I was able to overcome my parents crude attempts at religious brainwashing and learned how to think properly. I studied a lot of ancient Greek philosophy when I was a teenager and, even now, it continues to help me see the grevious errors in most people's irrational beliefs.

Atheists are like ignorant evolutionists. That sounds bad and I didn't want it to come out a slam, but they don't believe in a deity and many don't even want to acknowledge evolution. The ones I talk to kind of do the ostrich routine. Hide you head in the ground when the subject is brought up. (actually that's an old wives tale) The neat thing is that I was around for two when they were near death. It's amazing how fast God became a possibility to them. But then again, when the panic was over and they learned they were going to live, they reverted back to atheism. Gods not impressed!

This is actually kind of an interesting way of putting it. (Not quite the standard "what do atheists believe" question.)
I have a wonderful life. When I was a believer, I used to consider myself to be "thankful". (To a higher power.) Now, I don't know if "thankful" is exactly the right word to use, because I don't believe in a DEITY to thank. I guess a better way to describe it would be to say that I APPRECIATE all the good things in my life, and I don't take them for granted one bit.
I'm thankful to my parents, for giving me a good life, and raising me to be a good, generous, self-sufficient person who KNOWS not to take things for granted. I'm thankful to my husband, for bringing love and friendship and companionship to my life to a degree I could never have imagined. I'm thankful to my friends, for being a part of me through thick and thin. I'm thankful to my children for reminding me that the little things count.
P.S. Ignore the above poster who ignorantly says that atheism is simply a "protest" to Christianity. He's not an atheist, and has no idea what he's talking about. The quote "People who are athiest normally say they are so because Christianity and other religions go against their free will to do whatever they like such as getting drunk, having sex with whomever they wish and overindulgence with food." is ignorant, dismissive, and insulting. There is NO atheist who would say such a thing. He just can't understand or accept that just because someone doesn't believe in the same thing he believes in, it doesn't mean they're immoral. (I'm sorry, but that's SO irritating.)

Atheists have this set of beliefs:
- They do not believe in the existence of any supernatural power, that includes: God, Angels, miracles....etc
- They believe in the power of science & logic.
They thank their parents for having sex and bringing them to this world. But I really oppose the stereotype about how Atheists are 'empty' and live without a purpose. They have love, friendship, families, jobs, sex, money and many other pleasures that give their lives a meaning.

Atheists search also for the meaning of life, and by virtue of not accepting fairy tails about something called God, they seek other meanings of life. Nature is held in a God like way for many people.
Nature is more Goddess like rather than God like. And it is a good metaphor in that Nature is conceived and understood to be interconnected and dependent on a mutual cooperation between animals and plants of Nature.
Mutual cooperation is a part of Nature that humans have failed to utilize as an organizing principle. Instead, humans like the conflict model better because it allows for ethnocentrism, selfishness and childish excitement.

Atheists believe in themselves. If I succeed, I did it. If I screw up, I did it. Atheists are the nicest most intelligent people on the planet. Atheists rule!!!
Without a bible we have no reason for hate, bigotry, sexism, racism or anything else that the bible causes. We are truly free to make this world a better place.

Monotheism is mainly a Jewish and Christian concept. Sure Islam is concidered a Montheistic belief but truth is Allah was the Arab pagan moon god of many pagan gods long before Muhammed proclaimed Allah to be his true god. The Romans called the first and second century Christians "Athiest" because they refused to believe in the Greco-Roman gods (Zeuss, Jupitar, Venus...and Ceasor as god...etc). The word "Athiest" is taken from the Greek language commonly used in the Roman Empire. So to make a long story short, nearly all societies in history since the beginning of time has had religions. Athiesm is simply a concept created 1900 years ago to combat Christianity. You can say it is in protest or rebelion to Christianity. People who are athiest normally say they are so because Christianity and other religions go against their free will to do whatever they like such as getting drunk, having sex with whomever they wish and overindulgence with food. To me it seems silly but that is really what it all boils down too. Athiesm is merely protest to Christianity.

like you, we have parents, and lovers, and friends, and peers, and colleagues and so on. Like you, we are bound by a web of love and trust between us and these people. Except you seem to think you need a supernatural being to keep you from murdering and to give meaning to your life.
Like you, we strive to be happy, to make our "in-group" happy, the whole enchilada. We are the same, except I believe in one less god than you do. Unless you also believe in Zeus, Ra, Allah, Odin, and all the other gods come and gone.

The only thing required to be called an atheist is no belief in god or gods.
I thank the people around me when they are helpful.
