Our family is going on a trip to Florida in 2 weeks. I have 3 kids a 7 yo daughter, an 11 yo son, and a 13 yo daughter. Unfortunately they are someyimes lazy when it comes to car rides. They never tell me or my husband when they need to go to the bathroom. We try not to make frequent stops to the bathroom so we can get to our destination quickly. We think we're going to make all three kids wear diapers as they've been known to have "accidents" in the car before. What diapers should we use and should my husband and I change them ourselves? Also my husband is thinking about spanking them when they wet their diapers without telling us they have to go. All answers are appreciated.

LOL I have an eight year old and two four year olds. We travel all the time. I make them go before we leave. I don't let them drink too much so that they won't have to pee every 15 minutes. You children are almost teenagers (heck 5 more years and your daughter will be old enough to get her own place and buy cigarettes. She should not still be peeing on herself (especially if there are not medical conditions). I would never think of using diapers on children this age. My four year olds wear training pants on our trips and at night when they sleep. But your children are much too old to be walking around with diapers on and not feeling like they can tell you guys when they have to go. Your husband has the right idea with the spanking part, but not the diapers. GET A GRIP ON YOUR KIDS!

Well at thier ages I would think its way past time they know when they have to go. As for long trips?...Ive been on many and unless your in the desert somewhere there are always plenty of places to stop. Rest stops, fast food places all have restrooms. You could even have AAA plan your trip around well traveled routes with plenty of stops. Unless there are some physical problems here i cant see why you would want to use diapers at there ages your simply reinforcing thier behavior. That said I DID something similar years ago but it was a unique situation. I was traveling with my son who was 7 at the time but was recovering from surgery. He was physically weak and the less movement he underwent the better until he was stronger. So yes I used diapers with him FOR THAT TRIP ONLY. As I said I believe it was a unique situation. I think you need to plan better and but more responsiblity on your kids they are old enough to now better.

Totally Absurd-the whole thing.

First, MAKE them go to the bathroom before leaving home. Schedule stops and MAKE them get out of the car and at MAKE them at least "try" to go to the bathroom. If they have to get out of the car and go in to the restroom and into a stall, then they're probably going to go.

Secondly, explain that you will not tolerate them peeing their pants and that they need to tell you if they cannot hold it. And when they tell you, stop within the next few minutes. When my kids have to go, sometimes they mean now, not 20 minutes from now.

Lastly, if they've been given plenty of opportunity, let them pee their pants and make them wear them for the duration of the trip (if its truly not an accident) and MAKE them get out and be seen with wet pants.

Diapers are NOT the answer.

Absolutely NO DIAPERS! That is totally CRAZY! Just stop and have your children go to the restroom rather they think they need to go or not. Make a couple extra stops every so often because your children may not be able to hold it as long as you & your husband can. I have 2 children and they never have had accidents at all.

This is a familiar fantasy in the diaper fetish world. Apparently there are parents out there being tricked into thinking this is acceptable, but there's no way you're one of them. If you're getting off on this line of thinking, I hope for your sake that you'd rather be the child than the parent in this little fantasy, otherwise you're dangerously close to pedophilia.

Give it up. Stop this behavior right now before you hurt yourself and possibly someone else. IT'S NOT WORTH IT.

If your kids are that old and still not using the toilet to relieve themself then you and your husband are not doing something right. I would not take a trip to Florida with them if they can not say when they have to go to the bathroom. Do you really think it is okay for you or your husband to change a 13 y/o? That is sick.

LOL.....wow! Well, I seriously think you should consider rescheduling and planning for stops. Come on, it's not that much time to stop at a rest stop or convience store for them to use the restroom. We do that. I just don't understand why you can't make the time to do so. They're probably worried you'll get upset at them if they speak up, so darned if they do, darned if they don't type of thing. Make some time. They need to be able to stretch their legs too. Good thing you don't have a family pet going too. Good luck.

i am qualified to work with children and i feel this is an incredibly bad idea
this is like takin a step backwards, you need to explain to your children that thye must say they need to use the toilet.
do not make your children feel bad about needin the toilet or they will feel afraid to tell you and wil have accidents, it is excitin when goin on a trip somewher and often children wil not want to use the toilet before they go so say that they must sit on the toilet or you wont leav until they do, dont tel them off if they do not wee etc but just encourage them to sit on the toilet. DO NOT PUT THEM IN NAPPIES.
and u must make stops to use the toilet, it is in the childrens act that children should be able to use the toilet when needed, this isnt a very good thing to be doing at all. lets put it this way
If i put children in nappies becaus i was goin to deny their rite to use a toilet and they r fully potty trained anyway i would be done for abuse
sorry
but its true

That is just sick, and I'm sure it falls into some abuse category somewhere. So what, the trip will take a little longer if you stop to let the kids go to the bathroom.

What?? Did you get this idea from that crazy astronaut???
