Yesterday when my teacher was proofreading the French essay that is due the next class period, she stumbled upon one word that she didn't know what I meant, and I casually told her that, "oh, my friend said it was the word for bookshelf." And then she paused, after like 10 seconds she said, "a French friend helped you write this?" And I don't even know what I was thinking, but without thinking, I just said, "yeah."

Which now I feel so bad, because first of all, my friend only proofread it for me, correcting all the errors. Now it seems like someone is actually helping me do an assignment, and it seems like I am cheating!

I guess I just care for her impression of me. For this past one year and a half I have been taking French, I have been doing really well, and I just don't want her to think that the only reason i am doing so well is because someone is helping me.

I am just very confused right now, I'd appreciate a lot if you guys can tell me if I indeed am just thinking too much.

While I agree that explaining would clear the whole thing up, I was thinking, wouldn't explaining, and adding more information to her, seem like I am guilty? I mean, there really is no way you can prove if I indeed did the whole work by myself, it just seems fruitless to me that I am explaining to her?

Your friend does not help you speak French in class and is not there to help you take your test. Your teacher knows you better than you think. The fact that you are so concerned about this shows what a good student you are.

Don't worry about it. Your teacher was more taken back by you having a word that she did not know. When you offered the fact that you had a friend who taught you this new word, she deflected attention (just a bit) to save face. My money says that she wishes more students sought to improve grades by using all of the help available. You'll be fine : )

I can see where you may think explaining will seem as if you are making excuses. However, I would explain anyway. Tell her that you want to clear something up. Let her know a friend did help you proof your paper, but you wrote it. Tell her you don't want any misunderstandings as you care about her opinion of her and are working hard to do well in her class.

You are way over thinking this!
Example:
You are in a automechanics class and you go to a friend who is a mechanic to help you understand how the internal combustion engine works, is this cheating?
Example:
You are in a Speech class, and you go to a friend who seems to be able to speak in front of people very easily, is this cheating?
Example:
You are in an English class....

I think you get the drift, if your teacher is so petty to mark you down for having a friend who is French proof your paper, then PPPPPPhhhhhhhhhhhhffffffffffTTTTTTT! to them. (I'm a teacher and I would never do that to a student).
I say don't worry, I think you should be fine.

If she approaches you about it or asks you about it again just tell her that what you meant was that a french friend just went over it once you were done. Tell her the friend just helps you find mistakes and explains to you what is wrong and helps you fix it. There's nothing wrong with having a friend help you fix your mistakes, its just like having a tutor which is not cheating. Good luck !

Just explain to your teacher what you said in this post. Since you really want to learn french it shouldn't be to hard to let her know you are trying your best on your own and that you are lucky to have someone that can help if you struggle a little.

Just go to your teacher and explain to her that yes you have a friend who is french and all she did was proofread your assignment. you did the work by yourself.

Dont worry about it. If the teacher is going to think you cheated, it is her obligation to confront you first about the situation and get a clearer answer.

She probably thought nothing of it. If she did, she would have asked for more details before jumping to a conclusion that you cheated.

She is obligated to, before making a decision about your character.

Depends on what your teacher thinks.

Presuming that the objective is to be able to read, write and speak French, what difference does it make how one gets there?!

Explain what happened and offer to take an oral exam to prove you did the work. It's the most honest thing to do.

Adult thing, best thing to do is tell her what you told us. That you hold a high opinion of her and felt stupid for what you said. Be honest. You will get a lot further in life with honesty.
