You can still file, but you'll have a late penalty. If you're getting money back, you might as well file , pay the penalty, and take what you can.

As long as it's for tax years 2004 or 2005 you can still file the returns and get any refund due. The deadline for tax year 2003 was Tuesday so any refunds from 2003 or earier years are lost forever.
Just file the returns for the missing years and you'll get your money. There will be no penalty as long as they owe you money. If you owed them threre would be penalties for late filing and interest and penalties for late payment of tax.

"Filing late" is a totally separate matter from "paying late".

Nope, no (direct) penalty for filing late, but still, best to file ASAP. You can officially get 4 extra months to file by filing Form 4868.
But nasty penalties for paying late, even if you file Form 4868. In fact, 4868 has a place to attach the money you expect to owe. So that you get a refund when you finally file.
If you're only one day late, you could try filing "the old fashioned way" - on paper in the U.S. mail. With the snow of returns they're getting this week, I doubt they'll check the postmark on every one!

As long as there is a refund owed, there is no problem filing your taxes. There will be a late filing penalty, but it should be small. Compared to the problems of not filing at all, this seems pretty minuscule.

The 3 first people who responded don't know what they're talking about. Of course, you can refile. There is no late penalty if you're getting money back ... only if you're paying. There is a limit of far back you can file for refunds, but it's at least 2 years (maybe more). And, you won't get audited because of this.

Yes you can... by filing late you open yourself to the possibility of an audit at some point. Generally if you are receiving a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.

I think if you are owed money then you can file anytime.
If you owe you mail to one address. If they owe you mony then you mail to a different address. If you owe them money they would stamp you envelope LATE LOSER but if they owe you they just take em as they get em

I taught last night at midnight was the deadline to file taxes. So I'm not sure, it might be too late.
