Hi, I'd like to replace a number of outside bulbs with CFLs, but I currently have sockets in these fixtures that sense when it's dark and then turn the light on. I suspect CFLs won't work in these because CFLs don't work with things like dimmer switches. Has anyone tried this? Is there an alternative set up? I want to the lights to go on automatically at night.

Most darkness sensors just function like simple switches, so they should be ok with CFLs. The main problem with using CFLs outside is that they may not start when very cold (~0°F/-18°C). You can get special ballasted fixtures for extreme cold if that's an issue where you live.

The restrict for wattage in maximum furniture is predicated on the quantity of warmth it truly is generated with the aid of incandescent bulbs. a typical one hundred watt bulb gets plenty warmer than a seventy 5 watt and would overheat the fixture inflicting injury or a fire. CFL bulbs function at plenty decrease voltages and temperatures so which you will desire to have not got any issues using a CFL that supplies an equivalent quantity of illumination to a one hundred watt incandescent bulb as long as a results of fact the fixture can accommodate the actual length of the CFL.

They will work fine with those sockets. They are either off or on, unlike a dimmer switch which delivers lower voltages.

Of course you will also install a timer to shut the lights off in the later evening. No use lighting the landscape all night when no one is there.
