Old Outlook calendar and tasks keep coming up?

Why do old calendar items and completed tasks keep popping up in Outlook? The items have all been maked completed but when I open Outlook each week I get a ton of out of date reminders.
What can I do to fix it?

Archive all the old stuff.

Click on the Help Tab in Outlook and search for: Archive

delete all the reminder entries rather than just dismiss them
