I'm an ex-trucker but that doesn't mean I think all truckers deserve respect. Like every profession this one has its idiots. Why should they get respect?
But for those who think that trucking is a low skill job, maybe they should try it. I'm sure it would be quite funny since most people can't even drive their cars correctly. Actually I think you should have to spend two weeks in an 18-wheeler followed by two weeks on a motorcycle before you can get a car license...
The rules? Some are good, some are stupid. If they keep a bad truck or a dead-tired driver off the road. Good. Believe me I don't want them out there either. But when the rules tell me I can't drive even when i'm not tired but then I can when I am tired because I couldn't sleep during the last 10 hrs since i wasn't tired, that IS stupid. Not easy to come up with rules that work for everybody but there's got to be better than what we have now.
When I was trucking I mostly followed the rules and guess what, I wasn't making any money worth writing home about because the companies gave the miles to those who "did the job." Never was late on a delivery or pick up, never refused a load no matter where it was going, only had one accident (with a dock door) when I was a rookie but, then again, I wasn't willing to break the rules left and right to benefit my companies. If I had broken the rules the way they wanted me to and gotten caught, they would have dropped me without any hesitation...
Trucking has the same problem as many other industries. Drivers don't get paid enough for what they do. And before you say anything about that, go try it. How much would you enjoy seeing your home every two weeks for two days (and that's the lucky drivers) and spend 1/2 of that time getting ready to go back out. Trucks are cool looking but living in one is not.
And never forget that without trucks, America stops. Period. How do you think all the stuff in your house got to the store in the first place? How about your house? Did the lumber, bricks, etc, etc, fly itself over to the construction site?
If I am ever able to convince truckers to stop just for one day (I've tried a couple times), believe me you will feel it. It's too bad most people don't ever think about anything until they're directly concerned and that is why the trucks need to stop! Then please beg us to start moving again.

How can you ask a question that asks if a group of people deserve respect and then say only positive responses? I am positive that some truckers due deserve respect and some don't. I respect the ones that stay in the correct lane and obey Commercial transporting laws. I don't respect the truck that is in the left lane of a two lane highway for much longer than is needed because he has been trying to pass a truck for over and HOUR going 63. I understand that some trucks have governors on them, but they should understand the limits. I know my ex has a 15 Mile rule (that exceeds some state regs) that if he can't pass the truck in 15 miles then he stays behind the truck until he can pass him, or until he will not impede the flow of traffic. For those truckers, I am more than willing to let them over and understand we need to share the road. The ones in the left lane of a 5 lane highway are the ones that I don't respect.

you say yourself "...but there are the few that drive by the rules." that sentence SHOULD read "but MOST drive by the rules" to me, that answeres your question right there, if so many truck drivers are not obeying the rules then why should they get respect? There are few things more frustrating than when you are on a two lane highway and there is a slow truck in each lane ahead of you! Like other people have already said, if they show respect they get respect - I get the feeling that alot of truck drivers think that just because they are in such a huge vehicle everyone has to yeild to them.

Yes I think they do deseve respect. I work as a courier in Perth Western Australia and the number of times a day i see people in hatchbacks or minis darting around semis and B-doubles, expecting them to react like any other small car is alarming. These people are driving vehicles weighing over 10 tons and in some cases over 30. This is not an easy task and if you think it is a low skilled job then you have a very closed mind view of the world.
Why can't they deliver at night? Because shopping centers and industrial sites dont operate at night!!!

Truck dr's are doing a needed service and for the most part they are considerate of the little cars and the folks inside the little cars------ there are some that are not so nice and they need some education -- bottom line ,,, America moves in a 19-wheeler (number 19 being the man at the wheel).... most truck drivers are good guys and will help in a necessary situation..... they do deserve RESPECT.............

People assume driving a truck is easy. It is those same people that drive in the blind spot, or cut off the trucks. Sure it may not require a lot of schooling, but it takes a lot of talent.
I do think there should be mandated drug testing, to help catch the few that use drugs to help pull all nighters.

i think truck drivers do deserve respect as long as they respect others, just like any profession. they are out there dealing with a lot of traffic....they get cut off and then people put on their brakes, that is not easy to maneuver around! people dont realize the weight that those trucks are carrying and the caution they should actually use around a truck.

I used to drive a truck. Truck drivers deserve rspect for one other reason...
In a snow storm, who always leads the long line of cars trying to navigate covered highways? A trucker.
They should be thanked often.

I think respect gets respect. If you are a truck driver or a pedestrian I think if you don't treat people the way you want to be treated then you get what you give. I think you earn respect it is not a God given right.

I feel the same about it being the fact that i am truck driver my self. although some people may not consider this a job it is . Because if we were to stop one way or the other they would end up loosing there jobs. Cause we transport 99 % of things anyhow. thanks for the concern
