I seriously avoid the sun. Okay so I'm paranoid about skin cancer. But I have fair skin and have a reunion coming up in August. I have a slight blue or greenish pale undertone...very pale undertone...to my skin. So ivory, white, and black don't look right on me, but the dress I'm totally in love with is ivory. I've tried self-tanners but they ALWAYS look orange no matter which brand I've tried (I've not tried the new Aveno but I don't expect anything different with that), and very patchy. So I'd like to go tanning in a salon. What is the BEST lotion to use (don't care about price for the lotion as long as it works the best), how long should I start to go for? How often? Any other suggestions anyone might have are appreciated!

To be honest, I know the beds can cause cancer...I AM actually considering the air brush stuff. I'm also looking at some sephora stuff, see one of my other questions. Natural sun is just as bad as tanning beds, for the person who suggested that.

Hey,
I have had the same problems that you have, but DO NOT go to the tanning salon. I tried that for a little over a year, and then I got skin cancer. I thought that being tan was all that mattered, and now I realize that it really isn't all that important. I have had a total of 13 cancers taken off from laying in the tanning bed. Take my advice, please don't go.
You best bet would be spray tan or the rub on self tanning lotion. Clinique has a very good line of skincare products. You could purchase those at a department store. The spray tan is good, but be sure to exfoliate very well before you have it done, or it might turn out a little splotchy. You also need to let it dry very well before you put you clothes back on, or it will stain them. I know all this from experience.
I hope this helped some. Good Luck!

Well as far as being scared of skin cancer that can also be developed through the tanning bed but if you only go a short time than you should be fine! What I would do is get some SPF because your so pale or light skinned which will create more of a tan than a burn I would suggest a tanning oil which they normally sell in the tanning salons! I would get like an SPF
5-15 which should work but I would go to the salon they have several products you can buy and they keep them in your own little bag so every time you come back you have your tanning supplies which is pretty convenient! I would also ask a tanning salon specialist what may be the best product for you! I normally just use baby oil and it works pretty well!

First off, don't go! I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but if your are very fair-skinned, as I am, you are unlikely to tan uniformly anyway, even with a lotion. You can still look patchy, except it will be brownish patches instead of orange and if you have any freckles at all, they will jump right out there. Bottom line is, you will have to tan many times to get a uniform color, and that seriously damages your skin. Pale skin is better than wrinkles or "sun spots"!
Take the money you would spend on tanning and lotion and go get a professionally airbrushed tan. It may take a couple of applications, but it is sprayed in a fine mist and should leave a uniform color. It's not a colored mist, it's a light chemical that causes a reaction with the melanin in your skin (what causes the tan) and that is what leads to the tan. It's much safer and will fade gradually just like a UV tan.

the most important thing is to moisturize your skin before and after tanning bed visits. For the first couple of visits, you really don't need to use any kind of tanning accelerator, especially if you are very fair. Wait until you build up a base tan, then kick it up a notch with an accelerator!
Dry skin will tan unevenly and look fake-y; moisturized skin tans more evenly and faster.
good moisturizing lotion: palmer's cocoa butter lotion
good accelerator: Swedish Beauty products

since u are very pale, i would start out at about 5 min, & if all goes well, u can gradually move up by a min or 2, until u reach the max amount of time...there are regular, accelerator, amplifier, bronzer & tingle indoor lotions...let the salon staff explain the products they carry & help u choose the one most appropriate for your skin & tanning goals...swedish beauty, pro tan & fiesta sun all have very good lotions...the newest swedish beauty product, "crystal" is excellent, but a bit pricey (around $100 a bottle)...i think it`s well worth the money, however...my personal favorite is "hot tottie", made by pro tan...it`s a tingle lotion & very powerful, so i wouldn`t recommend u even try it until u get a good base tan, otherwise u will fry, trust me!!! remember to always exfoliate & moisturize your skin to help your color stay looking nice...hydrated skin tans better & aids in the prevention of wrinkles...hope this helps!!! happy tanning!!!
