Am I the only New Yorker that finds all these "is it safe?" threads offensive? They seem to pop up almost daily. You've got massacres going on all over the map and when was the last time NY was in the national headlines? 911? People need to shed their preconceived notions or maybe throw away those old VHS movies from the 80's that exaggerate (for affect) this great city. Geez....Is it safe to attend school at Virgina Tech? Columbine? C'mon people, consider how you would feel if people asked if YOUR neighborhood is safe...would you like it?

Totally safe, nothing weird going on up there. Typical NY people, a lot of rich people but the Upper East Side is traditionally the place with all the 'old money' rich people. Even going up above 110th St. into Harlem isn't bad. Columbia University is up there. It's the East Side, above 96th St. that some people still have problems with because it turns into Spanish Harlem. Even that area isn't like it was 'back in the day'. It's somewhat difficult to find a really 'bad' area of Manhattan these days.

The few 'bad' neighborhoods left in the city are just pockets, mostly in Brooklyn and the Bronx.

It's safe to stay there. NYC is considered the safest large city in the world. I have never been robbed, shot or even seen either of the two in NYC. People make NYC seem like it's the Wild Wild West when it's perfectly safe.

No place is safe if you're a p*ssy. Welcome to the big apple.
