J/A/S/O/N makes a great product. I've used it and continue to- it's great. I had previously tried selson blue and all the major brands which didn't work. You could also see a dermatologist.

I asked the same a while ago on this website. Someone answered me and this sounds really weird (and kind of gross), but I swear it worked. Take a spray bottle and fill it with vinegar. Spritz the vinegar on your scalp all over and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Wash your hair out several times REALLY well, so you cant smell the vinegar anymore. You have to do it a few times over the course of a week to really see that the dandruff isnt growing and flaking like it was before. I have really thick hair and I've had dandruff all my life, so I didnt think it would help but I SWEAR it did. A few people recommeded this, and someone also said Listerine works with the same method too. The acidity in the vinegar and listerine kills the dandruff and thats how it stays away, but you have to do it continuously- less and less as you see improvement. Good luck.

If by severe, you mean that you have thick patches that stick to the scalp and sometimes bleed when you pick them, you might have seborrhea, psoriasis, or excema.

If you have insurance, please see a dermatologist to be sure what you are dealing with.

Some people get help from the products listed in the other ANSWERS, you may need to try several. If the anti-dandruff shampoos don't work, try either T Gel as someone suggested, which I think has tar in it. If that doesn't work or causes a rash, you can try T-Sal, which has salicylic acid in it instead. There are several other brands out there that have tar or salicylic acid which are used to treat seborrhea or psoriasis.

Try Neutrogena T-Gel. Be sure to REALLY rinse out your hair. If you think you got it all by a quick rinse you didn't. If you have one of those removable shower heads, when rinsing out your hair, put the shower head right up against your scalp and really be sure you're getting it all out. Also, don't scratch too hard at your scalp when shampooing. If your hair is dry, don't use too much conditioner because that's just extra gunk in your hair.
