Hi, a friend has sent me a letter in Wordpad, but I cannot read it as I have Word. It just opens up with shapes and symbols.

Is there anyway I can convert it?

I'm new to technology so please answer in easy steps.

Thank you for reading.

Mr. Humbleone it doesn't have Wordpad as an imput option. I'm sorry if I'm missing something obvious.

Hi Ricrac, Tried that no joy. It did change the layout of shapes though...

Follow these steps:

1. Right-click the file and click Properties.
2. Under the General Tab, click the button that says Change...
3. When the menu pops up, find WordPad and double-click it.
4. Press OK.
5. Try and open the file. It should work!

First, see if you have Wordpad. Check Start, Programs. Might be in Accessories

If not, there is currently a free, online converter which is easy to use and does a good job. Go to

I suspect that this must be the other way around?

Files created in WordPad are just text files and Word can read any simple text file.

What filename extension does this file have?

Is it filename.TXT or filename.DOC?
