The little guy that everyone thinks is a 'Buddha" actually is not. He was a man and he had a name. He went around spreading joy and stuff. His name was "Hoota? Hoonta? Hota?" Something in that ballpark, but he was not a "Buddah." Does anyone know what his name was?

Hotei is his name and he is considered a Buddha by many, and rightfully so. Many including myself believe he was enlightened and had obtained buddha-hood.

The man must commonly refered to as Buddha was a man named Siddartha Gautama, and he was a man as well . A Buddha is simply someone who has become fully awakened, it is possible for you to be a buddha.

Right... you're thinking of a cultural depiction of what's said to be Maitreya, the coming Buddha... I think "Hota" is the Chinese word for it, but am unsure.

I was always told it was Lo Pan, a Chinese mortal-god (a mortal who by recognition of great deeds was elevated to divinity) of fortune and luck who used his fortune and luck to help others in dire need, both of tangible goods and of laughter.

Though Hota also sounds strangely familiar as well...

To be a "Buddha" is something you earn. It is not a person but a state of enlightenment.
