If it is what i THINK it is, it's called "assigned risks" in Pennsylvania.

SR22 does not exist in PA. Not in NJ or NY either. An assigned risk policy is for people with bad driving records & sometimes young inexperienced drivers (depending on the laws of the state). An SR22 is a form that is sent to the DMV as requested by the DMV to show proof of insurance. It is usually for a major conviction (DWI, driving without insurance, accident without insurance, etc) and it is required whether you own a car or not (would need nonowners policy if no car owned or available for regular use). I hope this answers your question.

It is a financial responsibilty filing that you get through an insurance company. What it does is it lets the state know that you have a valid policy inforce with your drivers license number. Most of the time it is required after drunk driving or driving without insurance, but some states require it for Parolees, Court Awarded child support cases, and felny convictions. If it is for No insurance or Drunk Driving, then it is usually only needed for 3 years. If you let your coverage lapse, then the insurance company will let the state know that you do not have insurance. At that point, your license will be suspended again and you will have to take the SR-22 filing in to the DMV again and then pay the reinstatement fee if there is one in your state.

It is a required insurance that your state will demand,in order for you to drive an automobile, after you have been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
