I recently read "The God Delusion" which I really enjoyed. The only question left unanswered for me is the idea of soul. We obviously have one... is that just extinguished when we die? What of the connections we develop with people in our lives? If we have a deep love for someone else... that just ends at death also? I just wanted some opinions on this.

I guess I shouldn't have said that we "obviously" have a soul! What I meant is that there is obviously something there while we are alive and obviously NOT there when we are dead (both animals and humans) I used the word soul because it's certainly more than robotic movement... I guess I'm just digging myself into a hole here and I'm soon to be sorry I brought this up! I didn't expect so much attitude -- it was just a question.

Also, I don't think you have to be able to SEE something to know it is there.

An Atheist has no explaination of the "soul". We don't believe that any such thing exists. Where is this "soul" ? What color is it ? How big is it ? Where in the body is it located ? And best of all, after aswering the questions, answer one more. How do you know ?
Having a "soul" is anything but obvious. Doctors operating on those who die right before their eyes, have never seen, felt, smelled, or heard ant "soul" leaving the body.
I believe in the forces of nature. What happens to the animals, trees, bugs, fish, and all other living things, will happen to me also.
My wife and I love each other more than most people would believe possible. We're intelligent enough to know that we have to do all our loving here and now . Once our hearts stop, all that's left is memories.

Born and raised southern baptist. Deep interior the bible belt. Church 2-three times each and every week. approximately 30 years in the past as a new child in Sunday college i might ask questions. the biggest ones being ,"Why are not dinosaurs pronounced interior the bible?", and my popular ",the place did Cane and Ables' different halves come from?". I honestly have yet to take transport of a quickly answer. via every person. i replaced into seen a troublemaker and a disturbance. Being the precocious new child that i replaced into, i found out that to be usual interior the community, which replaced into the church, I had to dumb up , and develop right into a drone like all of us else. I found out from an early age that non-believers have severe prejudice against them. I observed all the atrocities that the so-referred to as "Christians" have been doing, incredibly racism. I keep in mind having to conceal my black associates so i does no longer get into worry. Then, at 12 years old I experienced something that I nevertheless have not heard of every person else dealing with, new child or grownup, and want no person ever will. i'm no longer able to assert that tragic and scary day is why i'm an Atheist, yet that replaced into the straw that broke the camels lower back.

I'm not an atheist, but I've heard a great deal of their explanations of things.
I'm not sure where you get the idea that it's obvious that we have a soul. That would be called an argument from obviousness. If it were obvious, then atheists would know it as well and maybe look into the matter a little deeper. Also, even if we have a soul, it need not mean anything more than that is an additional part of our makeup, such as kidneys or our thoughts. You can't actually SEE thoughts, but they exist and they need not be attrributed to supernatural processes.
Love would be explained as a biochemical reaction that encourages us to nurture our children and find mates to perpetuate our species. Just as depression can many times be traced to biochemical responses, they feel love is just another reaction to our biological processes.

Souls don't exist. It is obvious that we don't have one. Just because you're conscious and can think does not mean that you have a soul, it only means you're conscious.
As for love... you act as if it's any different than hate, anger, joy, pity, or any other emotion. It isn't. Social contact builds emotional bonds because you are a part of a SPECIES of animal, and just like all the other animals, you want your species to continue. What, you think animals don't express love? Check out the Discovery Channel sometime. Learn something EDUCATIONAL. Put the bible down slowly and back away. Those damn fairy tales will rot your brain.

You may "obviously" have a soul, but mine seems to have gotten lost some place. Are you supposed to keep it on a keychain or something? Love is an emotion that exists as long as there is brain activity. Once the brain stops then so does many different things. And if yo have lost your keychain god is going to be p*ssed and not let you into heaven.

You wrote regarding the soul, "We obviously have one". What makes you think that? If you can show compelling evidence for the existence of a soul, then do so.
Regarding love, it is just an emotion. My dachshund loves me, but that doesn't prove that there is a god or a soul.
The explanation of the soul? Simple, the soul doesn't exist.

What make you say: "we oviously have one " about the soul?
And yes the best part about being an atheist NOT "athiest" is to have a better grasp on the reality of this life! and so Love, respect, and the future of our society are very important!..

An atheist would most likely deny the soul, and view love as a purely emotional or sexual practice.

We don't have a soul. We do not have a spiritual component.
Love is merely a biochemical computation in the brain, nothing more, nothing less. After death, this biochemical computation ends, and as such, love vanishes too.

Love: Raging hormones sanctioned by society. At least half of all marriages fail, and what percentage of people cheat on their spouse? I have read the number that haven't is insignificant.
