Certain firearms are now illegal to sell or purchase, but guns have always been legal.

Look up "Second Amendment of the United States Constitution" for more information. And if you think that the USA is the only country in the world that legalizes guns, you need to read up on the subject. Start with a little country called "Switzerland".

Guns have always been legal. It is the de-legalizing that is taking place now. Think about the Wild West. No one needed anyone's permission to own a gun in those times!!

Firearms posession has been around since Colonial Times(the first English colony[and I don't mean permanent] was founded during the times of Queen Elizabeth I). They were necessary(and still are) for hunting and defense.
The right to bear arms is the 2nd Amendment, ratified in 1789.

The 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which gives citizens "...the right to keep and bare arms..." was written in 1791. Guns have never been illegal in the U.S.A. and never should be.

legalized implies that they were illegal and then made legal. since there has never been a blanket ban on firearms the answer has to be "never"

They have ALWAYS been legal, it is our basic "right to bear arms".
It is what the first settlers used, to hunt game with, and to defend themselves against attack!
